BFG A/T TA's -or- Cooper Discoverer AT
I've been doing a lot of research and have narrowed down my choices of new rubber to these two in the 315/75/16 size. I've read where others are not having any clearance problems with the exception of slight rubbing on the control arms for a few. I have a 2" front lift. I have a few questions that will help me make my final choice and any of your thoughts or recommendations will be greatly appreciated:
1. Which of the two would afford greater durability with me doing a lot of driving throught twisty mountain canyons?
2. Are my findings on clearance accurate?
3. I've priced both out the door at $744 for four. This includes mounting, balancing, tax, disposal fee, and free rotation for the life of the tires. Is this a fair price for local tire shops, and can a significantly better deal be had online not considering mounting, balancing, etc? If a good online deal exists, what is the website?
Thank you in advance for any info you can send my way.

Are you planning on changing rims? 315's will "fit" on the factory rims but they will wear poorly and quickly on a 7-8.5 inch rim depending on which you have. If you are getting new rims, size and offset will make a difference on rubbing.

I'm certainly in no position to argue with what BFG recommends. I personally would not run a tire that is over 12 inches wide on an eight inch rim. I'm sure someone here is using that combo and will chime in.

I put a set of Cooper Discoverer ATs on last spring. I pulled my trailer(s) for about 8,000 miles and they show no wear yet. I have 265/75R lrE and am very happy with them. I have not even put snow tires on this year yet. I don't even have any weight except for the fiver hitch in the bed. I am quite suprised as to how well they are doing. I know that some snows with weight would be better,but................ :-[ :-[
Tom
BTW, we got about 5" of snow last night and I was driving in it most of the day.

It's no competition to me.
BFG all the way- I ran the Coops for years before I bought my Dodge. They wear a bit longer but aren't even in the same league for winter driving and mud. When my current BFG's wear out, I'm going to replace them with the same.

I would go with the BFG'S, hands down a better tire, IMO.... However, having sold tires/and mounting, I would not put a 315/75/16 on a 8" rim, I don't care what the factory told you. A 12.50 wide tire belongs on nothing less than a 10" wide rim. If you put it on a 8" you will regret it. Side walls are to soft, your tire will have a "rolling" side to side feeling going around corners. Putting it on a 10" wide will push those beads out, your side wall will be more vertical to the bead, thus no rolling feeling, much safer. Been there, done that, and would never do it again. And we are talking about a CTD, not a gasser, big differance in front end weight.
Sorry off my soap box now. ;D

I put my 315/75R16's on 16x10 rims and it looks just about perfect.
Well, it did for a while, now they look realy small. :
I still have a bit of the "rolling feeling", the tires being "D" rated the sidewalls flex a bit more than I'd like.
37 inch "E"'s for me next time. ;D

Hey Dog, whats the biggest tire youd put on a stock 8" rim??? 285? 295?
[/quote]
You can go as high as you like on a 8" rim, but it's the "width" that kills you. If you keep it stock width you are fine.
Phox is correct too on the load range for the BFG'S is only a "D", I want load range "E" myself too. Load range "D" with a 8" rim, can you say "rock and roll".

Thanks guys....was thinking of 285 or 295's....would like the 315's but realize you should have the 10" rims and likely a 2" levelling kit or spacers.

Re:BFG A/T TA's -or- Cooper Discoverer AT
I have the Cooper Discovery ATs in 285/75/r17, but just because the tire guy was out of the ST or the MTs I cant remember which (the mud tire) IMHO the Cooper Discoverys were terrible in mud and now that we have a bunch of snow they suck there too. I had prior to these Dunlop Mud Rovers and loved them, however the wear wasnt the greatest(but not bad considering they were mud tires) and towing was even loudeer!! I dont think I will go with The ATs again I think I might try one of those.....................Japanese brands next ...................supposed to wear like iron, anybody ever had them before.???
