BFG AT or LTX MS tires?

I need new shoes on the truck and have come down to these 2 tires but not sold on one yet. Both are E-rated.
Most of my driving will be on pavement but there will be times I need to go offroad towing a flatbed trailer with my jeep on it.
Some of the parking area's are 4X4 tow rig access only going through loose gravel. (Rubicon Trail Loon Lake Dam parking ) so not sure if the LTXs would do well on this stuff.
They should both do decent in snow which the rig will be in at times.
The life expectancy of the tires are the selling point of the LTXs.
I keep getting mixed reviews on the BFGs milage.
Some say 65000 miles others say 20000 miles.
I can get either set for within $50.00 of each other so price is not a selling point.

Just looking of opinions on what others have found.
THanks, Ken

If it was me......the BFG's. The LTX's have weaker side walls. My Pops have them on his Chevy HD2500 and they bulge out more. He does almost no towing (I get used for that duty) and absolutely no offroading. So they work for him. Besides, the BFG's do look better.........JMO

May I add one more choice, Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo.
25000 miles so far, tire ware seems very good and wet traction much better than LTX's. Check them out on tire rack price looks to be in the same range.
I got the best price I could find on the internet and then went to local firestone and the beat the price, no problems.
My LTX's lasted 50,000 but were never to good on the wet pavement.

What size tire are you buying? I also need new shoes and I've been reading until my eyes are crossed on tire brands. I'm going back to a 245/75/16 on my truck.
I've been thinking about the LTX MS, but the Revo's have caught my eye.

the Revo's sound good.
Did some research on them and everything sounds good.
A little pricy but not much more that I was going to pay for the others.
Thanks for the help.

Are you looking to stay with an OE size tire? I'd look at the Firestone Transforce AT. It's a commercial application tire. They're not available in sizes bigger than OE though.

If you're going bigger, or if you're just picking between those 2, I'd go with the BFG AT. I took the OE Michelin's off after 38K miles because they slipped at the first drop of rain and didn't wear well. I just pulled the BFG's off at 123K on my odometer, and that wasn't running them down to the cords or anything.

The Revos are also an excellent choice. They'll ride smoother than the BFGs. I like the BFG because they come in a 295, Revos don't.

I plan on going between 265s and 285s, Probably 265s though.
I will be pulling with this truck so I want to keep the tire size down.
I am pushing for the Revo's
all depents on availability in load E rating

I have 85,000 miles on my LTX's. I also tow a Fifth Wheel Trailer at times.
I'm just about on the wear indicators. (235x85x16)

One of the main things not to do, is exceed the recommended air pressure for the vehicle. I run 55 up front and 50 in both the rears. If you have a dually, more than what's indicated on the door will only wear the center of the rear tires out sooner through the middle of the tire. That is a full load rating.

The other thing is Balance. Tire stores tend not to pay attention when they balance tires. If you see any left to right movement on the tire when its being spun, its not centered. Likewise, up and down movement. It won't ballance like that.

When I spend more than a 1000 dollars for tires, I tell them up front I intent to watch the balance job and will have the final say weather or not I like the balance when the tire is done. This last set of tires took more than an hour to balance. The desk manager came out and said it was taking to long. I told him, he should hire people that know what they're doing and suggested he have another person assist the one he had assigned to do the job. Its difficult for one person to get that tire up and centered, especially if he's a small person.

Another thing, tell them up front you want tires with a manufacture date within 2 months of each tire, less time is better.

Front end and shocks of course must be good as well.

I've had two dually's over the years (93 Ferd and my current Dodge) and never followed the inflation recommendation on the door. All those tires wore out in the center when in the 60 thousand mile range.

If you go to the tire store, grab a BFG and a LTX and stand them side by side.
(same size tires) The last time I did this at SAM's I found the BFG to be much smaller in overall diameter which means the speedo is going to run faster as the tire will turn more rev's per mile.

One final thing, if you don't have to deal with Mud and Snow, the XPS Rib is what to go with. Steel sidewall and tread. The one set I had on my 96 Dodge Cummins got 96,000 miles. That was 3/4 ton truck.

I think you get want you pay for.

I just installed a set of Mich*** XPS 245/65/16 on my truck today. What a Difference!!!!! It drives and rides sooooooo much better.

I took off Nokian V.265/75/16 E, what junk. After they took off the tires, I pushed my hand on the tread and it was very soft, felt like a C range tire. No wonder it drove bad. The XPS is a much heavier tire. I'm very satisfied and reccommend them to someone who needs heavy duty tires.
