Anyone Refinished Sport Headlights?

Anyone refinished the Sport headlights.. Mine are really bad... almost like the clearcoat is flaking off... Heard of someone polishing them out.. and then clearcoating them... not sure if it was just rumors.. Anyone tried it??? Rather not buy new lights....

Ive heard of people wet sanding them with a really fine grit like 600, and then buffing them with some kind of wax or polish. But I would worry about wrecking them. I dont know what else would work, Frank

i havent done this to a dodge, but i used to do it to the chevy marker lights all the time when i was in the auto refinishing industry...wetsand them with 2500 or 3000 grit, then buff...and they will look brand new...

Sanding Kit

I used a micro mesh kit that ended up with 6000 grit paper and then topped off with cream. Each time you change grit you change sanding direction by 90 degrees. Once you are done there is a special cream you applie that will protect and prevent them from clouding up again. According to micro mesh you are not suppose to wash them with soap and water and a rag as that is what is the biggest cause of fading on plastic lenses. Take the lenses off as it makes it a lot easier.

Im about to do my head lights. I have Done the fog lights wich are the same as the head lights. I sanded them with 220 then 400 then 1000. I just polished them up with some 3m medium cut compound and the degreased them and layed on 3 coats of clear. You may need to use a finer grit papaer like 1500 if you are hand polishing. If you are going to re clear i would spray them down with somed bull dog....It makes paint stick to plastic. I would re clear them because my lights only lasted a month or 2 b4 they turned yellow again. You may even want to polish them up and take them to a local Auto body shop and have them use some good clear on them.

I had great results with Meguires Plastx:

As well, Permatex makes a kit for polishing and sealing the lenses. Maybe that is what you were thinking about?:

Ive never tried it so I cant say if its good or bad.

What is needed is to remove the outer layer of plastic from the light covers. I do mine with 2000 grit wet paper then buff out with medium compound and a wool bonnet on the buffer. Works very well, takes off the oxidized and yellowed layer and clears them back up. Will last as long as the original did without clear coat. The clear may make them last longer but I have never used it so don't know. I have used toothpaste to clean them as it has jewelers rouge in it. (cheap toothpaste of the old style, not the new types. This also works on a watch that has been scratched!)

I've done it a bunch of times. I go to autozone and buy a pack of wet sanding papers with varying grits. I almost did a write up a few months back, actually. Anyways, the most IMPORTANT thing I can say is to make sure you get all the yellowing off of the lenses BEFORE you start stepping up in grit. Otherwise, you're going to end up with a hazed lense and have to do it again.

For a polishing compound I used Meguiar's Scratch-X. I keep polishing and polishing until I like the end results.

Thanks guys.. I'll try to get them done this week... I normally have a good supply of sanding.. polishing compounds around... Blue Majic is my favorite... but I've been using a little of the Scratch X....
Polishing is nothing new to me...

Thanks guys.. I polished them tonight.. Started with 600.. 1000 and 1500... That was a fine as I had... then hand polished them with Blue Majic.. and finished with some Scratch X... I removed the right head light.. a little of a pain.. I did the left in the truck... They came out pretty good.. I might try to finish them off in the buffer... but I'm happy they way they came out with just hand polishing...
I guess if the yellow returns.. I'll have to reclear them... Going to leave them for now... Maybe post some pics tomorrow...

i just did my 97 and my wifes 2002 ford by following instructions i found on here and using 1500 (couldnt find 2000)wet and then using plastic clean from any wax company then waxing them with car polish. on my truck it is about 150% better and on my wifes ford forcus ( and by the way she leaves her car parked 99% of the time and uses my truck) it was about 75% more light and lookes better on both. hopes this helps.

I used the Permatex Kit and it worked great. You start out with 1000 and end up with 2500 wet sand paper. Go to a auto parts that sell paint supply get a sheets of 1000,1500,2000 and 2500 and a can of rubbing compound alot cheaper than the kit.
