Anybody running load range D on 2wd?

Went tire hunting today and the tire I like is only availabe in load range D for my size. Anyone running this load range? The guy said they were 8 ply instead of 10 ply but had a weight rating of 3k per tire. The tires on the truck now are load range E. I only tow occasionally, about 5K trailer weight with less than 500 lbs tongue weight.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Jim

Re:Anybody running load range D on 2wd?

I had Load D tires for about 35,000 miles. They did seem to have a smoother ride than the E range tires did. I carried a 15,000# 5th wheel trailer to Kerrvile(about 600 miles R/T) with no problems at all.
If I had a load on my truck all the time I would go with Load E tires all the time. But since I run empty 99.9% of the time, I am able to run the Load D's

I'm currently running "D" tires on the front and rear of my dually installed 15k miles ago.
The rears are wearing fine, but even inflated to max pressure (65lbs), the fronts are showing signs of under-inflation.
The inside and outside of the tread is wearing much faster on both sides. The sidewalls aren't firm enough to support the weight of the Cummins. I'm running unloaded 95% of the time.
I will be switching back to 'E' tires on the front soon as these tires won't last through the summer. [undecided]

E rated are the only real safe tire for the front end of our trucks. They may ride worse but less chance of a blow out on the front tires.

Just replaced my Michelins with Yokohama Geolanders and much better ride and less wander in the steering.

SH, that sounds exactly like what's happening with my tires. My first set I replaced at about 28K, and now that I'm at 45K this second set is just a few months away from being replaced. I also noticed that at the max 65psi, the front tires bulge a bit. I'm definitely going with the load range E tires next time, even though I'm unloaded almost all the time. I'll probably also get the Rancho 9000X shocks to maybe compensate on the ride a little bit.
-SFB

That's what I think SFB.
At the kind of prices these tires go for , I can't afford to replace them every year. :'(

I can't get over 18,000 miles on any tire.I drive gravel 90% of the time and in the field. I was thinking of getting D range tires this time because I wanted to go to taller tire like 255/85/16 or 285/75/16 but after listening to you guys I better stick with E rated tires as I am loaded a fair bit of the time. I just wish they made a decent 255/85/16 In load range E.

Re:Anybody running load range D on 2wd?

Just put 2 E-rated Uniroyal Laredo road tires on my 96 2WD this morning. The set that came off had 60K miles and had never been rotated (rears wear much faster than the fronts for some reason ;D ). Having kept them at 65-70 psi they still wore the outside a bit more than the middles. I run the rears at 70-80 depending on if I am hauling anything and they wear perfectly even straight across the entire surface. I reckon I will bump my fronts up to 75psi and see how they wear.

The Uniroyals were about $105 each for 245/75/16s :'( I wouldn't run anything less than a good D-rated tire even if you do not haul anything. The motor weight is enough of a load for the front tires all on its own.
