Adding Fog Lights - Input Needed

Hello, this is my first time posting here. Been reading on here for about a week since I bought my 2001.5 Dodge Cummins. It has the holes in the front bumper for the lights but does not have them. Has anyone added them? Wondered if anyone knew whether the standard light harness would have pigtails for the lights to plug in and all I would need to do is change the light switch in the dash. Any input is greatly appreciated. Andy

Welcome to DTR 806.

You've found a great place to learn about our trucks.

There are othes that can provide more/better info I can on this topic, but I understand that if you want the factory lights, it takes quite a bit of work.
I know others have chosen to place after market lights in the stock holes and make their own mounting brackets.

Welcome and enjoy we hope you stay a while.

Rich.

I am pretty sure the pigtail is up front. Not sure on this but the dealer may have a foglight kit that includes the lights, mounts and new headlight switch on the dash.

You can get a kit from the dealer with everything you need. You will need to remove the bumper to install the factory kit. It comes with a new switch for the dash, lights, mounting hardware, and a harness. If there is a connector on the lower radiator support with 2 wires in it it is prewired. If it is prewired all you need is a relay in the distribution center (behind driver battery), headlight switch, mounts, lights, and new bumper inserts (the lights need a larger hole in the grey inserts). I bought the factory kit and the relay for the distribution center and used only enough of the harness to reach the connector under the truck.

If you go with aftermarket lights all you will need is the light switch and a relay to get power to the connector under the truck (if it is wired). Then pick a light and decide how to mount them.

I got the factory kit last year. Comes with everything, grey inserts,
headlight switch, wiring, there are a lot of things to do but all of it is pretty easy. I did it in 2 stages, bumper, inserts, mounted fog lights, then next day did the wiring.

Wondering can you just run a on/off switch and supply hot and a ground to the lights? I have the lights they just bolt in no problem actually never took a bumper off I just took the gray inserts out they just pop off and on and you can even use the loverd cover to protect the lights looks pretty good.

If you do decide to go w/ the factory set up, great. But IMHO, I'd go with an aftermarket setup. I've had both setups in my 2 CTDs and I has much happier with the aftermarket setups. I ran some PIAAs (cant remember the exact part # 960 or so..) and was very impressed. Good luck and welcome to DTR.

I don't have the lights...but mine is all prewired. Switch is integral with my headlight switch, and I checked that is does switch the pigtail near lower radiator support.

Thanks for the info

Guys, thanks for the information. Forgot to ask what the factory kits costs? Can any of you remember what you paid? Andy

Rattletrap1 If your truck didn't come with the fog lights I don't think you have the switch I know mine had the wiring plug but not the switch it's different you may want to double check.

Maybe mine had lights before I bought it...sure doesn't now, nor the brackets. I did check with a volt meter that the pigtail had juce when I pulled the switch outward.

The light kit from the dealer is $200+. Can often find on Ebay for about $175 or just the lights w/brackets for <$100.

I haven't pulled the trigger on puttingfogs on yet. I like them...but like other things better.

As a side bar: Anyone else get PO'd at people driving with foglights on in perfectly clear weather???

Can the Stock wiring harness handle higher amperage fogs? I just got this rig and it doesn't have the lites, but I would like to look aftermarket for some good amber fogs.

BTW, new to the arena here as I just got this 97....

I used to...until I got my Dodge. Now I realize that I need as much forward light as I can get AT NIGHT since the factory headlights IMO suck. I even put in Sylvania Silverstar bulbs and they still suck (again, IMO). So at night, I usually hit the fogs too (despite the weather) to get as much light out there as I can. Works pretty well too. I even went from 37.5 Watt bulbs in the fogs to 50 Watt bulbs and with those and the headlights, I'd say I've got about as much light as my factory F-150 had.

I'll agree with STAT, the factory head lamps do suck. Before I had a front bumper replacement, I'd use the factory fog lamps any time after sunset. They especially come in handy if you have any type of grill guard or replacement bumper that block part of the beam. Just my $.02.
