98.5 with mind of its own.

I have a 1998.5 24 valve. Automatic 4x4. Under the dash just above the skinny peddle is the computer port where you hook up the reader. It has a red light of the left side of it. When the red light is on my truck won't start. It just acts like the battery is dead. what does this red light mean? I replaced the batteries a couple weeks ago and the red light went away until tonight. when driving home tonight I noticed the red light it comes on for about 15 seconds then goes off about the same amount.

I pulled in the garage and shut it off and it wouldn't turn over again. I opened and slammed the door and the light went off and it started fine. I am sure its a loose connection but don't know where to start.

No anti theft devices installed that I know of.

All help appreciated

Thanks

Tom

Are you sure? Has one been removed and there is a bad wiring repair?

1998.5 with mind of its own

Have original window sticker, none listed on it. I am the 2nd owner

would loose connection on neg battery post create the red light?

Went back out and found a loose connection on the drivers side battery.

Do all 1998.5 have the computer connection with the red light on the left side?

No light here on my 98.5
Like the others have said its probably a add-on imobilizer, just you have to figure out how to stop it from keeping you from starting it

Yeah, sounds like it is time to start tracing wires! Good luck, and post what you find.

I will contact the original owner and see what he has to say, thats the nice thing about buying from the owner instead of dealer. I will keep everyone posted on the results.

mind of its own

I contacted the original owner and he said it had a security system on it when he purchased it new and they disabled it per his request.

It has a smart lock sticker on the windows with a 800 number I will call it and see if I am on the right track.

Sounds like they didn't disable aftermarket security system. If it is working now you may want to keep it enabled just in case.

Mind of its own

I contacted the Smart Lock people and the told me how do disable the alarm system. So if you have your eye on a Dodge with smart lock just call them and they will tell you how to get around the system

No more red light no more problems.

Glad you found that out. My dad's 01 has the same thing your talking about and he also has trouble sometimes starting the truck. My 98.5 has the factory alarm and a SECURITY light blinks on my dash and the horn will chirp when I lock the doors.

Mind of its own

They had me drop the unit down from under the dash and open it up and unhook the wires from the card. That fixed it on my end. Just 2 screws and about 5 minutes. This had caused alot of headaches for us the past few weeks.
