3rd Gen center caps on 2nd Gen truck

They don't fit. At least not on the back. They are too shallow to work with the OEM chrome steel rims I have. They hit the axle before fully seating.

Anybody know a solution? How do they work on the 3rd Gen with steel rims?

I have 3rd gen steel (chrome) rims on my truck, no issues fitting the hub caps, also have fit alum rims and caps with no issues, first time I did try it I mistakenly did not line up the "clips" with the lug nuts and it would not fit, the hub cap has to snap onto the lug nuts
I cant see how the hub cap is too shallow??

I'm getting them clipped on right. I just compared the 3rd Gen cap to the 2nd Gen cap - the 2nd Gen is much deeper (about an inch).

I'm not the only one. I found this in an old post - unfortunately no one answered the question.
Okay guys I need a little help. I bought take off tires and wheels to replace the tires on my 1998 2500 ram. The wheels fit wonderful, but the center caps don't fit the rear hubs. After much frustration and a little imagination, I discovered that the rear axle bolts hit the inside of the center cap. I sweet talked a friend and he let me see if the center cap off his 94 2500 ram would work and they do. So can someone tell me what changed after the 2002 model??????

I measured the part of the axle that sticks out of rim. It's about 3.25 inches. The 3rd Gen center cap is only about 3 inches at the deepest part.

Does my axle stick out further then other trucks? It sticks out beyond the edge of the rim. The rim is a stock, steel 16".

The caps fit fine on the front. I've attached a picture of my rear wheel and the style cap I am trying to put on it.

I have the same issue with my center caps with my H2 wheels. Been like that for two years, haven't lost one yet. I'm wondering if they changed the rear axle hub in later years, seems its the earlier trucks that have this issue.
