255/85/16 Tires a good idea?

Hello all. I am looking at replacing the 245/75/16 tires that came on the truck with a set of Toyo M55 255/85/16's. I have heard good things about the M55, but I am not sure about the size. I use the truck to carry a 2200 lb camper and tow a small boat. With 355 gears and a tire that is 3 inches taller, will I miss the power in the mountains? Will I notice the sidewall flex in a taller profile tire like this? I am considering the size change to get the extra clearance and fill the wheel wells a little bit. Is it worth it? Thanks in advance for the help

Re:255/85/16 Tires a good idea?

Off the top of my head they have a load rating of 3K per tire. Not too shabby. I have run stockers, 285/75/16, and 255/85/16 and my Toyos are the best tire I have had on my pickup. Didnt have any problems going 600 miles this summer at 17,400 gross, just aired up to max and went. The sidewalls will give you a little flex but not very noticeable (no worse than my 285/75's) and found myself starting in first instead of second just to ease stress on my clutch. I regularly pull 19 on the freeway empty, so it didn't hurt my mileage. I also am running an 02. Dont know if they are different but I have no rubbing problems whatsoever. Fills the wells quite nice IMHO. They are 15K miles old and I have about 60% tread left. I run a LOT of miles on gravel, dont hesitate to light them up and they are wearing like steel. Just keep on top of the rotating.

Hope this helps
Mark

OBTW They do sing a little. Not too bad though. Snow/ice is pretty good with them and water on the freeways is no problem. Mud likes to plug them up fairly easily, but a little throttle and they will clean.

Re:255/85/16 Tires a good idea?

ok why do i see alot of dodges with 235/85/16 and why does it look like a bigger tire that the 245/75/16? i hate the 245s 75s 16s thats what i got and as soon as i get a chance iam yanking them car tires off my truck > i was planning on goin with the 235 85 16 becuase on most of the dodges i have seen with this combo it looks like it snugs up the wheel well and is a little bit bigger tire?

Re:255/85/16 Tires a good idea?

If the tires you're looking at are a 10-ply with a high weight rating you shouldn't notice any more sidewall flex at all. Yes you may notice a touch of power loss in long hills, but not too much. I don't know what the M55's are but I believe Toyo makes a pretty good commercial grade traction tire that wears darn near like steel and does fair in all conditions. The 255/85/16 is a good size for filling the wheel well and it's also a narrower tread that will generate less heat and rolling resistance. If you're running heavy or long distance this would make for better fuel mileage, and fewer revolutions per mile.

Re:255/85/16 Tires a good idea?

I switched to 255's several years ago and just recently had to get new tires .... another set of 255's. They fill the wheel wells up and help lower the RPM's a little on the highway (It's been so long I can't say how much). You should have no problems in the mountains. Anyway, if you do, use it as an excuse to add a "little" fuel.

Thanks to all that have replied. I think it sounds as if the 255 is a good way to go, as there have been no negative posts. The tire size will only come in a D load rating in any brand, but it is still rated at 3200 lb so it shouldn't be a problem. My camper is not that heavy.

On another note, this site is a gold mine for CTD owners. Hats off to everyone involved!

Re:255/85/16 Tires a good idea?

235/85/16E is THE universal truck tire. The same diameter can be had in 265/75/16E and comes with ~400# greater load capacity. This is the standard tire for Y2K 2500's.

255/85 is going to be a tad tall for 3.55's in my opinion.

Re:255/85/16 Tires a good idea?

BF,
I have been running the 255-85-16's for 3-4 years. I first went with the BFG M/T and really liked the look. They needed a spacer, so I got a 1 1/4" Aluminum spacer from performance Wheel, and that gave me plenty of space for when I haul. The speedo will be off by 10% so now 60 means 66, and so on. also remember that when you calculate the fuel mileage, and distance.

Re:255/85/16 Tires a good idea?

I have been running the 255/85s for about 6 weeks now, and I love them. They are quiet, great in the snow (What we have had), and are pretty good in the slop too. Tall and skinny and dig like a shovel. Probably will not go back to 285s. Not sure yet though.
