mine is an 01, (built 2000 feb) still its an 01, mine were cracked in various places, according to the rim repair shop, were I was going to have them fixed he said, it was a bead angle to tire contact issue that was wearing out the rims, causing the lip to get thin and edventually crack, he claimed even after being repaired they would over time fail again, I can't comment on the alloy theory.
around here I found it harder to find many choices in 16inch tires, where 17 are every where and easily accessable, another plus is with the 17inch rims on an 00-02 truck you can upgrade the front rotors to the 3rd gen stuff and get a set of brakes that will actually stop your truck,
parts needed to make it work are:
1) 17inch rims 3rd gen
2) 3rd gen rotors (costs almost the same as 2nd gen)
3) 3rd gen brake pads (costs almost the same as 2nd gen)
4) 3rd gen caliper brackets (40-80$ for the pair depending where you get them)

very noticable if cracked, look at the inner bead on the rim, it will be running at right angles to the bead(from outside of the bead towards the center of the rim)
