2000 charging issue (moved from 1st gen)

Hi guys, just joined the site. I have a 2000 Quad Cab with a 6- speed and lately have noticed the same problem. I'll be running down the road and the Alt. gauge will drop from 14 down to 0 and the check gauges light comes on. I am hoping it is a ground issue and am looking for some probable causes. Any ideas?

Stop by a parts store & have them test your alternator. My diodes tested bad & voltage intermittently dropped. it would come right back up until 1 time it didn't. I ended up in a small town at OReillys changing from a suit into work clothes asking to borrow tools to install the only nice new reman alternator to be found in town. Making them price match the competitor that was out saved some $$ but I gave up what may have been an OEM alternator for a crappy chain store reman.

A good starter alternator shop can rebuild but you must tell them you want Denso parts. Aftermarket parts, mostly made in China, are a crap shoot. Denso rectifiers and brushes are good for 200k or better. Rather have that than a Chinese chain store job.

Thanks guys, I had my alternator tested and turns out it was fried. The same shop said they could rebuild it for me.

My 2000 4x4 Quad Cab LB, w/6 speed is stock, so I am not sure of my lift pressure. A couple of years ago my lift pump failed and it killed my injection pump. Luckily it was under an extended warranty. It was reconfigured by the dealer when they reinstalled. Do you have a gauge to monitor your lift pressure?

If you have an old R12 Freon install kit w/gauge, you can use it to check the lift pump fuel pressure, otherwise kits are avalable at most chain type auto parts stores.

Don't forget to close the fill valve.

Screw the connector on the fitting of the injector pump on the driver's side of the engine.
Turn the keyswitch just enough to "bump" the starter to get The Free 25 Second Lift Pump Run.

Stock spec is 10psi+, most folks look for 15psi.

I extended the gauge kit line with about 5' of greasegun line extensions, fittings and a needle valve (to dampen pump pulses so the gauge needle isn't a blur) then sealed them up with Permatex non-hardening sealer.
