Would a 4" or 5" tip add extra hum with a straight pipe??

Would a 4" or 5" tip add extra hum with a straight pipe??

Hey all. I was driving down in Concordeville PA today on 202south and came along side a 24v 2nd gen dually. As he drove by me I noticed his huge chrome tip on his pipe and his truck had an awesome sound. Actually it was quite deep. It "appreared" to be the stock exhaust with just a tip on the end. Maybe 4" or 5". IF his truck was straight piped would a bigger tip allow for a deeper tone?? It sounded even more like a big rigg. I cannot imagine if it still had a muffler on it that it would sound this good. YOUR THOUGHTS!!!

It might make it a bit "boomier" but I'm not so sure it would make it have that big rig sound a bit more if it were straight piped.

You can't go wrong in the looks department though.

One thing that I have heard that makes sense to me is that a larger tip can actually act like a megaphone.

Ya know - HOWDY HOW ARE YA kind of thing!

a megaphone indeed.

if you had the normal 'pipe' and then added a tip, end to end, there would be no change. but if you were to cut the original pipe back about say, 5-6 inches, and then install the tip, thus regaining that 5-6 inches, then it would get louder all in all. I have an aftermarket 4" and the guy at the shop told me to cut off the end of the inner pipe, and extend the outer tip to make it louder.

You could also just get stacks!!

Like this 5" truck turndown... Its on a 4" system that I bought from Big Exhaust... I have ran the straight pipe..but I finally decided that I didnt like the crack that it gave the sound. I do like the sound of the 16cm housing makes with this system. Still a little too loud when I jump on it hard. I want to hear more of the turbo whine!

here is a shot of the single 5'' with the 4'' from turbo- back.the duel 5'' exhaust made the truck to quiet , looked sweet when I got the bigger wheels and tires on, but was alot quieter then the single 5'' this is with 4'' exhaust for both setups, trust me, I have done 5 different setups on my truck, and for the exception of stacks{WHICH RULE!!!} the best sound was 4 inch from turbo, back to a 5'' tip behind the wheel! 12valve of cource !!

Anyone know where I can find a 5" to 6" tip that's angle cut, but not miter cut (about 15 degrees instead of 45)? I'd like to have one like what I have now, that's 4" to 5", with a rounded edge on it. See pic.

Thanks,
Chris

Sorry, i do not know, I make all my own tips and exhaust. I always have something laying around from my big truck or my friends bring me pipe they do not use, stuff like that! if you lived closer I would say bring it over and I would make u one!! I don't even charge!! I just love to listen to them leave!!

Doodah,
I have had thgoughts of just cutting the 4" section off of the one I have, but I haven't figured out if I can be sure it will fit after I cut it off since is is rounded on on end and smaller sized on the other.
