Question Rotella

Hello All!,

I just got a Turbo D Cummins equipt 99 Dodge and discovered that it has Rottella 15 40 in it. The P.O. said thats the oil to use all year. I found a bottle at the store and read that it has an anti thickening agent that makes it good for all climates. I live in New England and it's been single digits durring the day for a week now. Should I prematurely change this oil?

Thanks in advance,

Fernando

Go buy a qt of it and let it sit outside with your truck overnight. In the morning, open it up and pour a little out. Then you can see for yourself if that is what you want in your engine.

Winter oil

Thank you, I'll try that. I think the PO put 11.5 quarts in it since it's showing kinda high on the dip. I wonder though if that would cause damage. I'll probably just change it to Rotella t synthetic. I picked up the last 3 gallons at Wall art. But its 5 - 40 and I dont see that in the owners manual. Is it good for my 99?

Thanks,

Fernando

IMO, Rotella (even the synthetic) isnt the best choice....

Fernando,
The Rotella T 5w40 Syn will be fine to run in your truck.

I will have to agree that I am not a big fan of Rotella but it works well for many individuals.

If I lived in a single digit climate and I was unable to plug my truck in, I would prefer not to run a 15w40 oil. If I was able to plug my truck in the majority of the time I would feel comfortable with the 15w40.

I agree. The Rotella will be fine to run in your truck. I would have changed to 5w40 as well, but they did not have any in saskatchewan that was less than 10.00/qt. The add and full mark allows for 2 qt variance. I always put 10 qts in and check it. 11.5 qts- I'd drain some if I were you.

About it being a little overfull, I wouldn't be overly concerned abou it. I know several guys who use 12 quarts every oil change. They don't want to leave that last quart in the jug I guess Some of them have over 200k on their rigs with 12 quarts of oil at every change. I don't think there is any real need to be alarmed.

I understand what you are saying rhino, but he is in the Northeast where there are extreme weather differences. I wouldn't take any chances.

Yeah I agree. I've been drainin the oil for the last couple of hours. Its been dripin thick brown molasis like 15-40 for sooooooo long so I dicided to sit and check postings. Embarased to say it took about 15 min to get the drin plug off. I tried 2 impacts and finaly and ruluctantly I put a lever on the ratchet.
I think I'll play a game of Red Alert 2 before I go out there and put the plug back in.

I cant complain though, at least I didn't have to jack the thing up! Yee ha!

When you put the plug back on, torque it to 40 ft lbs. Book says 42, bit there have been some plugs that crack. I just tighten mine to where it stops with a 12" wrench handle, then snug a titch more.
