White Smoke, Power Loss, Diagnostics Code?.. Need Help
I'm fairly new to diesels so I have to ask some opinions on this one. First of all, when I start my truck up I get some white smoke comingout for a few minutes. Sometimes alot of smoke and sometimes not much.
second, when I'm on the freeway my truck will slow down losing speed and power, but my RPM's will stay the same. and this only happens when my speed is between 35-60 mph. the only way I can get back to speed is by slamming my pedal to the floor, and even then it boggs out before accelorating.
I had a diagnostics test ran and the code read "Injection pump Timing Fault". Now I'm not sure what that means exactly, but can the transmission or a chip somewhere be causing this problems or does it mean my pump is going out? It seems to me that if its a "Timed" pump that it could be re-timed, but then again I am to to diesels.
please help this noob out.. thanks

A dying lift pump will cause that code.
Most will say it's the code of death for the injection pump, but not always.
Find out the health of the lift pump by getting a fuel pressure guage on there, and if it is indeed dying or dead, replace it ASAP, as a dying or dead lift pump will kill an injection pump pretty quick.

Stock location is on the side of the engine, just below and behind the filter.
If the pump has been replaced by the Dealership within the past year, year 1/2, it will be in the tank and the one on the engine will be MIA.

Depends on your mileage.
If you are under 100K, then you should still be under warranty.
(or 136K going "by the book")
Search out the recent-ish discussion on when the Cummins warranty kicks in for the upcoming Dealer fight.
If you are well outside that range, it'd be much cheaper to either do it yourself or find a local shop that knows Diesels.
It used to be if you were showing that code, the Dealership replaced the lift pump and VP44 unless you had obvious modifications, I.E. performance box.
Expect on paying around $200+ for a lift pump R&R, $1200+ for a VP44 R&R if it ends up being the injection pump.

I HAD TO REPLACE THE ONE ON MY 2000 AT 113000 MILES. IT IS FAIRLY SIMPLE TO DO AND YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF IF YOU HAVE A LITTLE TIME AND MAYBE A GOOD FRIEND TO HELP YOU. DO A SEARCH ON VP-44 REPLACEMENT AND LP OPTIONS. A NEW VP-44 WHICH IS YOUR INJECTION PUMP WILL COST YOU 1046DOLLARS AND I JUST BOUGHT THE AFTERMARKET WALBRO SETUP OFF THIS WEBSITE SEE SHOP DTR AT TO OF THE PAGE. ALSO YOU NEED TO GO AHEAD AND PUT SOME GUAGES ON YOUR TRUCK OR AT LEAST A LOW PRESSURE LIGHT. I AM SORRY YOU HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM I WAS VERY MAD WHEN IT HAPPENED TO ME BUT THINGS HAPPEN AND THE GUYS HERE HELPED ME THRU IT AS THEY WILL YOU.

like i said i had to do it and i am still paying for my truck. midwest fuel injection is the cheapest place i found to get the vp and depending on where you live you might be able to get one of the other 24v owning members on here to help you get yours running.
