Whirring noise transfer case/driveshaft/rear end..

I recently had the entire rear end rebuilt including everything but the ring and pinion and posi. A lot of this whirring noise went away with that job....but not all of it. It only happens when I am holding a speed or accelerating. It's tough to hear over the engine though. When I let off the gas it goes away so I know its in the driveline somewhere. The transfer case had been leaking so I replaced both output shaft seals, the input seal, and the output seal on the tranny while I was in there.

My question is, could this whirring noise be coming from a u-joint? It's almost a whining noise that gets a little higher pitched with speed. There is no vibrations or anything else that would help me diagnose the problem. I'm afraid its a bearing somewhere that i'm missing.

Could it be that the rear end ring and pinion have worn over time and just make a little noise? The trucks got 140,000 + on it with the original gears.

Any insight would be great!

Thanks in advance.

Check the u-joints first. Then, if you have an extended or quad-cab, check the center support bearing. Finally, check the rearend(the truck's, not yours ha ha). The bearings in the diff could be starting to wear, though it's not really common. HTH

Ahhhhhh the center support bearing. Forgot about that...i'll take a look at it. I know it's not the rear end I just had that rebuilt last month...bearings and all.

Thanks for the reply!

Did you find anything?

I have a similar noise. I can turn the engine off and push the clutch in or throw it in nuetral and it keeps on whirring. I just turned 102,000 but it has been doing it for about 10k.

Puzzled,
Dave

Nope, it still whirs. Not real loud. I think the guy who set up my rear end didn't do it quite right.
