2003 when they switched from the VP44 to Common Rail Injection.

I guess you could do it to your 99, but it would cost as much as just buying a used 2003.

fuel goes from the VP44 where its pressurized through individual hard lines to each cyl, through a set of injectors and into the combustion chamber.

think of the vp like the distributor on a gasser. but instead of introducing electricity to the equation, it adds fuel. and just like the distributor, it has a certain "firing" order it goes through as the parts spin around inside.

Big injectors and lower compression will quite a vp44 truck down.

Put 2 cycle oil in the fuel. It will quiet it down a little and lube your pumps.

the common rail engines have a injection pump that basically just pressureizes the fuel to very high levels and sends it to the "common rail" which is basically like the fuel rail on a gasser. Then there are individual lines going from the rail to each injector in the head. Theres always fuel being supplied to the injectors. Unlike the 24v which use mechanical injectors, the common rail's use electronic ones. each injector has an electronic solenoid that opens up and lets fuel into the injector when the computer module tells it to. The common rail engines are so quiet because since they use electronic injectors, they can actually inject or "pulse" fuel into the cyl. more that once per cycle. This helps quiet them down and helps lower emissions
