The keyway, or the key itself? Or the key seat? Keyway is broached into the gear, key seat is cut into the shaft, the key is pretty self explanitory. Either way, a defect in the key or the pump shaft could cause failure, or the pump locking up. The key is used to index the pump to the engine, as well as be the weakest link in the chain to prevent damaging further parts. Was the pump hooped after this?

I've also seen Macks come into our shop where the cam gear spun because drivers backed into a loading dock to hard and the sudden stop from hitting it caused the gear to move.

When I installed my VP44, I was watching the key very closely. When I first installed it, the key touched the walls of the key slot in the gear and rotated back in its slot in the VP44 shaft, so that the forward edge of the key was nearly flush with the shaft. I didn't like that and backed out the IP, used a small punch, inserted it from the front of the gear to make sure the top surface of the key is parallel with the surface of the pump shaft. I could see that if I installed it with the fwd edge down, the engagement with the gear would not be proper and the key would be stressed.

my i.p. died 2 weeks ago, the local diesel shop goes to pull the ip off its frozen on the gear...he did try everything he could to get it off. took timing gear cover off torched the gear off and the keyway is all mangled, i have the old keyway and gear...i did hear a loud pop noise just as the truck shut down. im assuming the rotor in the pump seized, and cauzed the keyway to get jammed in the slot. He's been working on diesels for about 25 years and said hes never seen anything like this before. i completly understand what u are saying about keyway alignment, ive installed many pullys and pumps on small engines.i didnt install the new pump but if i did thats one thing id be looking at too. $2800 later my truck is now back.
