What kinda oil you running in cold weather?

I live in WI, and the temp here is getting down to around -10 below over night.. Just wonder what oils you all use. I have some Rotella 1 15w-40 but was thinking of running the Mobile1 synthetic 15w-50 in it.. or can I go to the 10w-40 mobile1 synthetic.. What are your opinions?

Re:What kinda oil you running in cold weather?

By no means am I trying to start an oil war! I run Amsoil 15W-40 HDD and marine in my truck. It's pour point is -47F. I do not routinely plug the block heater in, unless the wind chill is terrible.

I think Rotella's 15W-40 pour point is around -26F. Pour point is the temperature at which motor oil will cease to flow. Just like petro diesel fuel, petro oil contains paraffin wax, that begins to crystallize at low temperatures. Pour point depressants are added to petro motor oil. Untreated, their pour point is 5F above zero.

So regardless of grade, any synthetic is going to flow better in cold weather.

Re:What kinda oil you running in cold weather?

I was using Rotella 0W40 synthetic until I read the threads about the oils that are certified CI-4 or whatever the latest is and the 0W40 is not certified...all it says is it is ok to use where the CI-4 [I think thats it] oils are used.
Its getting dumped tonite because it is not certified.

Petro Canada Duron 5W40 'certified' is going in.

We will have -34 with a windchill of -54 tonite.

I've been using Rotella 15w-40 and have had no problems. Oil pressure seems to build fast. Started right up after work today -2*
