what do you make of these codes?
Well it was -36*C last night and the block heater plugs at work are current limiting and allow a draw of 800 watts only. This appears to not be enough to keep the diesel engine warm enough to start so as I tried starting it jumping it about 5 times I decided to give up and let it sit overnight. The next morning I drug a genset and pluged it in to the genset, left it for about 3 hours and started the truck up. Now my check engine light is on with the codes P0500, 1693, P0237 can anybody make any sense as to why these codes would be thrown? Truck runs fine and everything appears to be working. Hopefully the battery voltage dipped too low and scrambeld the computer BTW will the check engine light clear itself or will the dealer have to do this?

Now I do not have a computer on my truck but I work on them all the time. I have done similiar things to my alarm system and laptop in my truck when the battery was low and I cranked the starter. When the starter drags, it draws excessive current and the voltage dips low. This causes a nasty spike into the electrical system and can corrupt the memory of the computer. Like I said I have a 1st gen and have not had the opportunity to repair one yet. But it sounds like that is what has happened. Does anybody know if you can do a Hard Reset to these and clear the memory?
Have you found out why the truck would not start other than being too cold?
I never have a problem starting in the cold here and it was COLD here last night, It got down to 48*F. If I ever want to see your kind of temps, I would have to open my freezer.
Good luck Jim.

Jim when it is this cold the oil turns into a tar like substance and restricts the movement of all moving parts to the point where they will not turn, as well your CCA of your batteries is way lower than the rating stated on the battery. This is the reason it would not start. Once the generator was used to run the block heater all things were back to normal.

Un-plug the e-z from your Map sensor and data port, then run it. If problem still persists check your map sensor. Do you have an exhaust brake? If you do they can cause alot of soot, which will foul the iat and the map sensor. You can back probe the map with it plugged in to see if you are getting a .5 volt signal.

The 0500 is wheel spin - will go away if you disconnect the batteries.
1693 is the companion code, the 0237 Im not sure I couldnt find it on www.obdii.com. Try disconnecting the batteries for a couple of hours.
Hey what are you running for oil??
UFA has 0W40 Esso XD-3 synthetic (group 4 syn) for fairly cheap and Walmart also stocks it.

Heres an update, the truck when cold runs as though it is being defuled. It will only rev to around 1600 RPM, after 10 mins or so it starts to run fine again? It feels as if your pulling a house but once it warms up it runs normal with a hint of hesitation. Any help would be great.

I dont think that is the issue. I have ran this truck in the cold since new and never had an issue. The forcast is calling for a heat wave all the way up to -8*C so we will see if it makes a difference.

Well I discovered my problem. turns out the Edge EZ is the culprit of my engine grief. I removed the chip for the trip to the dealer and the truck ran fine. Installed chip again and truck ran like crap, removed the Edge again and truck runs fine again. The good news is it sounds as though NADP (north american diesel performance) is going to send me a new chip when I send them my old one (its less than 2 years old). Now if I could only get my truck to stop eating hydro/power steering boosters/pumps.
