want sick LP to experiment with...
I'd like to do some close inspection and autopsy in a lift pump that's been removed from service - preferably a pretty late model that's still operational but weak, with fairly low hours on it, and hasn't been disturbed or disassembled. I'm trying to get a handle on what makes them fail, and if there might be a decent remedy that will put them back in service - at least as spares...
I had made this request once, got several promises that turned out to be no-shows :, so if not interested, please don't respond - I'd like to come up with a couple to go with the motor section one of the fellas here did come thru with.
I plan to do photos and a detailed post here if I come up with anything promising, and will gladly pay any shipping costs - hopefully, something useful can come out of what I find - and it's better than simply tossing one out in the trash....
I'd sure appreciate it... ;D ;D

Sorry it took so long Gary to get mine out. But I put it in the mail today. You should have it shortly. I apologize once again for it being so long but I either forgot or I've been busy.

"I have a 99 Model with 122K on it, sounds like you want something less used."<br><br>Yeah, I really would prefer something less used - and besides, instead of tossing yours, you should FRAME it or have it bronzed - that's quite an accomplishment! <br><br>BB - thanks - I'll be watching for it...

That's amazing. 122K on a stock LP . Did you do anything to it to make it last that long? Replace the banjos with hi-flow banjos? Any type of additive? How often? Did you upgrade to larger fuel lines? I'm really curious.

Lift pump - and the VP-44, in my opinion, should be good for about the same length of service as a well maintained, non-abused automatic transmission - somewhere in the 125,000 miles up range, and anything much higher than 175,000 miles would be an exceptional "gift"...<br><br>Older, pure mechanical pumps were less sophisticated - thus more durable, and usually will go much longer, all things being equal - that applies to both the mechanical LP's and injector pumps.<br><br>Toss in reduced lubricity fuels, hard use and bombing, and life expectancy can drop accordingly.<br><br>I'm trying to focus primarily on lift pumps that haven't outright died, but are simply dropping off in fuel supply - can't do much with a DEAD pump - that's usually pretty final - but *I* have noticed that MANY owners are blissfully driving around with pump that are way down on psi, but still partially functional - and I'd like to see what causes that sort of reduced performance, and see if there is any sort of reasonable "cure" or fix that would return then to service, or at least allow saving them as a usable spare, rather than tossing them.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm in that category of <not so> blissfully driving around with a partially functional lift pump. <br><br>That is why I was wondering what are some of the early warnings. I know ... I need to get a guage!<br><br>When I changed my fuel filter a couple of weeks ago, after a couple of key-cycles I *didn't* hear it run. The truck started, ran a few seconds and died. After several more tries it started and smoothed out. No problems starting since.<br><br>Note - I drain the filter canister into a clean, clear container; look at it, and pour it back in after I install the new filter. I don't have to worry about disposing the fuel, and I start out with a full filter.<br><br>On the road, pulling my 35' 5er across the mountians on I-70 in Colorado and Utah it does pretty good on most of the hills, but on the few that are steep enough to need to lock out the overdrive it feels like it is surging at the highter RPMs (approaching 3000). Sometimes I think it is just the trailer bucking on the rough parts of the road, but other times it feels more like a brief surge of power ... kinda like an 8-cylinder engine running on 7 and sometime the other hits too.<br><br>As noted in my signature, I have the RV275 injectors; no fueling box. I do have a boost module and elbow kit on it.<br><br>I guess I need to update my signature soon. I now have XM - my truck ROCKS!
