UN-Plugged Trans. Sensor, Whats its purpose???

Heres the deal...
My trans. had been acting funny by somewhat hanging in gears. For example it would be at the normal shift point but keep revving up in the lower gear even when i was not trying to make it because i had the same amount of pressure on the pedal.

I have pics in my gallery of it unplugged.

At first i just thought that my trans was bitting the bullet, and i crawled underneath and noticed it unplugged. Clip was not broke, so i put it back in and everything seems to work normal again.
Just want to know if that plug was causing my trans to act up???
Or what it does??
Also my fluid smells a little burnt when i checked it a few days ago. Just changed it 8,000 miles or so. Should i change it again or wait a while longer.
Hoping to do a complete rebuild this summer. Truck is a DD but i don't go far or every day, so it may get another 6k miles on it till then. Try to get pics on the thread when i figure it out.

Hope these help.
I just wonder if the plug undone made my fluid start to smell burnt or if its slipping without me noticing.

Isn't that the speed sensor? I beleive it tells the trans brain what speed your going so it knows when to shift.

My speedometer worked fine, and I didn't have any lights go off.

Trans Speed sensor, the PCM uses it to determine if your moving, so it can ramp the gov pressure. Speedo is off of the rear axle.

It never hurts to drop the pan, to evaluate the health of your trans.

If you do drop the pan just a reminder... Dont over torque the bolts. About 120 in. pounds is all you need. I didn't know that my first time and bent the pan seal
