Two speed rear end?

OK, cmon now...

I thought I read a thread where someone was talking about 2 speed differentials. With lower top gear RPM it would seem that there would be better MPG. Is there any such things for our trucks?

I have a friend who had one in a Ford. It was aftermarket diff, and not a Fomoco part. Don't remember the manufacturer though.

i know that they make them but i cannot for the life of me remember who makes the splitters. i have seen them in the back of a magazine like in a chevy preformance mag or something like that because i remember them doing it to a 55 chevy truck to use on the track and on the streat to get the best of both worlds. If anyone can find it let me know a number to get a hold of them please.

Google "Gear Vendors". Not a 2-speed rear, it's a 2-speed box that bolts to the back of the transmission(or transfer case, if 4wd). Nice unit, but a little spendy.

Back in the olden days we had a quick-change rear end called a Halibrand. You popped off a little cover and swapped the spur gears to get the ratio you wanted. Took 5 min.

i believe new process made a unit that mounted to the frame after the trans, then the rear shaft. it had a 1/1 and o/d gearset. it was either electronically split or used vacuum to select. they were used on large motorhomes, large rv shops or differential shops may still carry this

I pulled a full replacement off a 3500 about three years ago that had been totaled. It had a split rear installed. The owner didn't tell me the brand, but it had a little pull **** on the gear shift lever that let him split between the two. Worked just like the tractor/trailer rigs. They're out there, but don't know by who.
