Turbo on its way out?
Changed my oil the other day, and had the intake elbow off to get at the oil filter. Checked my compressor wheel while I was at it. Had up and down play in it, almost to the point of touching the housing (this its had for a while though), but now it has a slight bit of in and out play as well. There was also a very light film of oil on the compressor housing too...just enough that if you ran your finger over it, you could see it on your finger. I have a BHAF, so I know its not air filter oil. Sound like my turbo is on its way out to anyone? If so, what kind of turbo can you recommend? My power goals (if its realistic with a single turbo) is somewhere between 550-600hp. This is my daily driver, and the heaviest I tow is a couple snowmobiles in the winter, and a pop-up camper in the summer. Unfortunately, I'm still stock at the moment, I was kinda hoping to get a turbo, and not have to worry about doing one later on down the road.

Mine has the oil film but no play. I asked about this a while back and didn't get many responses. I also run a dry filter so I am wondering if this oil film is normal. That is not good news about the shaft play. A little play is acceptable but it sounds like yours is reaching the limit.

Yeah that much shaft play isn't good. I get an oil residue on mine too and run a dry filter as well....I think it's just normal. If you have a HEAVY residue I think there might be something wrong....as mine is pretty light.
If you want a good turbo, check out the BD Super B turbo....spools pretty good with little to no mods and will support up to about 375hp to 400hp pretty easily. And then later on if you want to go big, get the upgrade kit and go to the BD twins. Just a thought!! ;-)

You're gonna have a little oil residue. That is what the turbo is lubed by. A little will sit inside the housing due to how the oil level comes to rest. However, it should only be a slight amount on the inner rim where the intake hose connects. Check your compressor wheel with a white rag to see if there is excessive buildup on that component. If there is, that's not normal, and you're probably looking at need for new seals. (afoulk), yours definitely needs a rebuild, no doubt imo.

How much would a rebuild kit cost me and are they hard to do? I'd just buy an aftermarket turbo, but I've got a sinking feeling that inj. pump is on its way out as well, and might need the money for that.

the thing that really gripes me too is that i just had it to the dealer about a month ago for all the up and down play in it. They told me that warranty wouldn't cover it unless the wheel was physically hitting the housing. Guess what, my warranty just ran out the 2nd week of this month

can any one help me on what to do at this point? Is a rebuild kit worth it, and wheres the best place to get one? Or am I better off buying an aftermarket turbo? I hate to spend a ton on a new turbo and have to buy another one somewhere down the line when I end up outgrowing it.
