TSB 18-024-00 Low Engine Power When The Automatic Transmission Is In Overdrive
Anyone had this TSB performed on their truck? If so what were the results.
I have a 2001 Quad Cab 2wd, 4-spd auto, 3.55 rear axle and have been disappointed with the pulling power when tranny goes from 3rd to overdrive since the first time I pulled my TT. Seems that the 3.55 was a poor choice, but didn't even consider when I bought this truck 3 years ago. Just assumed with the CTD that everything would be great since dad had an old 1990 and was a pulling machine.
Found out on www.dodgeram.info of a TSB 18-024-00 "Low Engine Power When The Automatic Transmission Is In Overdrive" that might help solve some of the problem. Seems Dodge detuned the torque management to limit wear on the tranny.
Need some expert opinions here. Plan to trade the truck in 2-3 years for a real 4-door so I won't spend the money for a new rear end.

They pulled back fuel timing in OD to help save the lock up clutch in the torque converter. Flash updating the ECM will bring the same fueling in 3rd lockup, to OD lockup. I also remember quite a few customers complaining of decreased fuel mpg after the update. I've never updated my ECM, but rather went the route of adding an Edge EZ and later some injectors. IMHO you would be further ahead of the game to go the EZ route.

I will confess that I know little about how the tranny works. All I know is that when truck goes from 3rd to OD it seems to lose much of it's pulling power. The rpms drop from about 2000 to 16-1700 and seems all the torque is gone. The truck doesn't tow well between 55-60 mph range.

I think with the addition of an EZ or something simular that might help get over the dead spot. Maybe some more air in and better exhaust might help also.

...and depending on the terrain and trailer weight, it won't. You are at too low of an RPM. Despite the speed, I find towing by RPM is the way to fly. Unfortunately that can be quite fast on a 3.55 geared truck. When I was stock if I kept the R's around 2000-2200 it worked great. With the truck modded I can pretty much maintain about anything at 1600-1700 rpm. What is your trailer weight???

TT weight loaded is probably about 7000lbs.
You're right, with OD off pulling at 55 mph, rpms are revving up pretty high and pulls good. When in OD they sink down and is awful, but at 65-70 mph it does great. Although I don't usually like pulling a TT that fast, but will on the interstate.

I tow similar weight with my boat and noticed the same thing in stock trim. The addition of a Van Aaken box (65hp) made all the difference. It still tows better at 65+mph but I can still maintain 55 well now, down at about 50mph the R's are too low and its time to kick off the OD. Usually 1800rpm and higher it tows and pulls like a dream.

What was the cost of the box? Where did you get it. I really don't want to harm the truck, just need a little extra as you state in that range. Since I plan to trade the truck in 2-3 years don't want to invest much or harm the resale with chips and such or damage transmission or engine.

You drive and not "hot rod" I think the EZ edge would do just fine. Mine was fine with the trans. It was the injectors that pushed it into "torque converter shudder" land. See the link I posted above to the classifieds here. He wants a little much for it, but maybe the price is negotiable.

I noticed some of these performance enhancing chips have monitors to install and measure EGT's. Apparently the Edge EZ doesn't, so can I be assured there isn't damage occuring. All I want or need is that little extra when at 55-60mph in OD.

I have pillar guages (egt,boost,oil pressure) with a edge ez. I had the same issue with lugging. It made a huge difference. I can tow fine now. I do run 3rd up to 60 under heavy load. I do not like to run my truck under 1800rpms under load. OD on the 47re is way over ratio. I wish I could raise OD 150 rpms without going to a 4:10. It is sad dodge designed a "puller" to naturally drop into OD under "lug". Without turning OD button off my truck pops into OD under load at 1500 rpms. This is not good enginering. SO we manually engage OD button everytime we slow down. I do believe it helps the life of tranny to keep it out of OD at least until 60 under load. Anyway, the ez is perfect for moderate towing. It will pull your rig under lug if you choose. Just not wise IMHO
