[QUOTE=GQC]I have been checking into chips for it and can't seem to find one for less than $300. [QUOTE]

Probably won't either...Sorry.
Best buys, when you've resigned yourself to the price, are in the DRT Classifieds.
Good Luck!

hey folks, i've found an Edge EZ and a Superchip programmer for my truck. both are used and only the superchip comes with directions. which one is better? The Superchip sounds like the better option to me from what I've read on the net. They are only $50 difference, so either one is an option. Thanks for the input. BTW...drove 70mph/2k rpm all day today and got a low of 18.8 and a high of 20.9 mpg according to my onboard computer.

Don't trust the onboard computer...do it the old fashioned way...miles driven divided by gals to fill up.

The computers are notoriously off by 1-2 mpg.

And ask this guy how he chipped a 12v...I want to know so I can chip mine.

My 12 valve was "chipped" from the factory.

Infedel...I think those "chips" have something to do with boundary layer flow and laminar flow so it is probably why you get 30mpg +
DC missed the boat on this....they shouldn't have improved the paint on the 3rd gens...maybe they would get better mpg.

I routinely get over 20mpg and drive not terribly nice, I picked up good gains by stacking my superchips and van aaken as well as the drag comp. the best thing I have found for mileage increase oddly as it sounds is driving the passes of N Idaho....I get 18 up the pass and 99 down......go figure. 28 is attainable if you are going with the wind down hill

I can get 38 mpg routinely with my set up below. Of course, that's on the sixty mile stretch of road east down off the Kiabab Plateau in northern Arizona. I get 29 mpg on I-80 east of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Ogalalla, Nebraska. Everywhere else I get between 16 and 22 mpg.

[QUOTE=GQC]okay...thanks for all the input folks. I kinda figured he was bs'n me but had to ask since I'm a dummy with diesels..this is my first one. I love this truck and it has/is serving me well. I have been checking into chips for it and can't seem to find one for less than $300. The Quadzilla adjustable setup sounds pretty nice (can't afford $500 though), but if I could just find one simple one to improve mileage for cheaper, I'd be happy.

Check the classifieds on this forum. Somtimes you can pick up a box like an edge ez for $200

yeah, I don't put 100% trust in the onboard display, but in the past, it has usually been pretty close, usually within 1 mpg....I just don't know if I can drive 70 all the time...LOL. The highways I drive in my area are two or three lanes wide and 70 is usually NOT one of the speeds in any of the lanes...LOL. People out here usually drive 80-90 in the fast lane and 65 or slower in the other two. So does anyone have an opinion or experience with the Edge Z or the Superchip programmer? These are still of interest to me. Thanks.

55-60mph usually yeilds me 3 or so mpg more than driving at 70mph.

anything above 70, you can usually watch the overhead trip meter's mpg average count downwards... drop speed to 55, and watch it climb back up.

Get the EZ, the superchip has had unreliable results with our engines. Also you can find a Van Aaken chip on ebay usually that is pretty good. They are slightly lower output than the EZ but they run less timing which I have heard is easier on the engine.
Don't use your cruise control if you want best mileage. Air up the tires and 20 is easy on some. My truck weighs in the low 6k lbs and goes 20 hwy easy.

I would stay away from the Superchip Programer...no personal expirience, but many negative comments here, over last few yrs.

Have no expirience with Van Aaken; have never read anything negative about them. I am a fan of the Edge EZ...particularly the older models (made 02 & earlier). More reliable (pre-china Mfg.) and less expensive.

For future reference...anything stronger than an EZ and you will need to start saving for a tranny upgrade!

Mileage wise - I tried a full tank...never exceeding 65 mph; got no gain compared to 70-75. 55 mph has been impractical in the past, for me, because time is money...but all things change.
If diesel stays at $2.75 (I know...this is less than most pay) I may have to try it!

Kind of ironic if that happens....I have just spent two yrs building a 500 hp CTD with excellent street manors....just to start cruising at 55 mph
