Truck acting funky

So I'm driving along today and at about 35-40mph my TC starts locking and unlocking rapidly. It's not the tranny slipping cause as soon as I flip the lockup switch it stops. Noise filter is on order. Haven't done APPS reset yet. Been to busy.

I checked for codes and I have a P0500 I believe it is. No vehicle speed sensor signal. I just replaced the rear speed sensor 2 weeks ago.

Then, to top it off, the worst thing happens. I go to crank my truck and it starts rough. Not hard, just rough. Feels like a death wobble kinda shake. No dead pedal, no rough running once it's running, perfect power, nothing's wrong. No codes on that. It's very random and doesn't matter how long the truck has been sitting. It just started today.

I have a sneaky suspicion that everything is related to that one code I got but I'm fearing the worst. I'm gonna go by the dealership monday and have it scanned and see what they come up with.

Any ideas yall? I can't have my truck break down right now cause I'm using it heavily for work and I can't afford a VP right now.

Code 0500 is "Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction"

Have you tried cleaning all the connections, it sounds like something is loose.

When you get some time try reseting the apps.

Mine has done that b4... long time ago... my tec said it was rf noise and needed a filter and a ground or something of the sort. I can ask him Monday. It kinda seem like it's "hunting" for a gear at 45-55 mph?

Yup. If I'm in OD at about 55mph (about 1200rpm) you can feel it rapidly locking and unlocking. As soon as I flip the lockup switch it quits so that tells me that it's not the converter slipping.

Check your voltage. Also make sure your alternator is charging. I had the same problem and it all started when my voltage was getting below the norm. Keep us informed

Voltage is good according to the dummy gauge and o'reilly's. Holding 14.2 volts charging.

Got the tranny figured out. My tranny builder told me to wrap the black wire with a tan stripe going from the alternator to the passenger battery in aluminum foil. Did that and it stopped the lockup problem.

The P0500 code hasn't come back thankfully so I don't know what the deal was with that.

As for the starting issue, I think it was the fuel getting to hot and cavitating in the pump. It was in the upper 90's that day and I was doing a lot of starting and stopping pulling a trailer around a parking lot and backing so it was dang hot under there. I also only had about 1/4 tank. We'll see if it happens again monday when I'm pulling again.

BigBlue,

Hope the wrapping the wire worked for you, I'm still fighting this problem, just did the ATS fix last night by rewiring the APPS. Mine will go 2 or 3 days without having problems in lockup, then all of a sudden it is back. Here is a thread that states all the things I have done. You need to check your APPS voltage going to the PCM. The back of your APPS will have the voltage that it should be reading at the PCM. Mine was reading .42 volts when it should have been reading .52 volts, this is adjustable.

Here is a thread with everything I have done to fix this problem, I will know in the next 4 days if the rewire worked https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=111410

With your starting issue, if you were having hard starts at a 1/4 that is a symptom of the VP44 going out, (same thing mine did before replacing it) keep the tank full and run it till it dies. Mine gave me no problems except for hard starting when the engine was warm and bad fuel mileage.

If you need any info on the things I have done let me know.

Blue, You can get that code from just spinning the back tires....I KNOW you would never do a thing like that though

I just got the p0500 code today myself. I've had the ABS/Brake light/no speedo issue already, and replaced the rear wheel sensor, but that didnt seem to solve the problem. My question is, if I have the 5sp, it appears that I have no vehicle speed sensor? How do I have a code for a sensor that I dont have??
