Trouble With New Tranny
Had Transmission rebuilt at dealer 3 weeks ago, (it was covered under my extended service plan) thank goodness. Now i'm having problems with it. After I tow with it (5 to 6K) when I start it and put it in Drive or reverse it won't move until I shift it from drive to neutral about 4 or 5 times and then it will finally engage. So whats up with it? I've called the dealer and they say bring it in and they will take care of it. It only does this after I tow with it. Just normal driving it engages fine and shifts good.
Anyone have any ideas.
Thanks, Bill

UPDATE
FLUID IN THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS LEAKING BACK INTO TRANSMISSION, CAUSING IT NOT TO ENGAGE WHEN SHIFTED INTO GEAR. MECHANIC SAID IT IS EITHER A BAD CONVERTER OR THE TEFLON RINGS HE PUT IN THE PUMP. THE TOW SHIFT KIT HE PUT IN CALLED FOR THE STEEL RINGS IN THE PUMP TO BE REPLACED WITH TEFLON RINGS. SO AS SOON AS HE GETS A NEW CONVERTER IN HE IS GOING TO REPLACE IT AND PUT STEEL RINGS BACK IN THE PUMP. MAYBE THAT WILL GET IT. SO IN THE MEAN TIME I'M DRIVING IT.

Update on Trouble with new Tranny
Took truck back and they replaced the TC and the Pump. It worked great untill the next day when I towed an 18ft utility trailer. After towing and sitting idle for 3 hrs, started and shifted into R and it did nothing until I shifted into N for about 15 sec and then it shifted perfect. They didn't help or fix anything.
Ok all you tranny experts, whats wrong, they sure don't seem to know. They told me that they did not remove the check valve in the line. Is there another check valve in the VB?
Calling tomorrow to set up appointment to take it back again.
Thanks in advance for any replys,
Bill

i know the pump does not work in park, only in neutral or in gear. seems that it could be as simple as a linkage adjustment, not activating all the way from park to reverse. of course this is only a thought.

Actually I thought the pump/rings/ would take care of that problem as it certainly does sound like a drain back issue. I guess if it were me I would try to replace the line with the check valve in it although the "only after towing" thing stumps me a bit. Bear with them, thats a tricky one.

To me it sounds like a drainback issue- like the check ball being just a little stuck.- Cool ATF no drainback, hot ATF drainback- on the other side it could be a crack in the tranny somewhere that will open up under heat only.

Thanks for replys. JBODY I thought the rings would do it to but they didn't. They do agree it is a drain back issue and when it first started, it was after towing only, but since i've had it back these few days, when I drive 13 miles to work (94 deg.) and it sits overnight, I have to put in N and let it idle for about 10 sec before it will engage, so it's starting to do it all the time now.
I got an appointment to take it back Fri. morning and this time I'm towing my utility trailer, (about 5K) and after it sits for about 3 hrs they will see what it's doing. AlpineRAM, it's possible it could be the check valve in the line not seating. I sure hope so, it's got to be something simple.

Could low line pressure cuase the trans to do this. Mine did this and I had to send my ctd back to the states for my uncle to fix. He fixed it and now I am getting my ctd sent back to me here in Germany. My uncle is a dodge diesel tech and I will call him to see what he knows of this problem.
