Trash in fuel filter bowl

I had the same issue last night, except mine had about .5" of sludgey poo in the bottom that was whiteish/gray in color. Dumped the fuel, and rinsed it in the parts washer. My dead pedal came back after 500 miles of no issues (after the APPS reset), but today it's gone again. I'm thinking my dead pedal could have been a by-product of some SERIOUS sludge in the filter bowl?
