Trex,
Speaking for the transmission that we build we arent just putting different parts into them. We are definately upgrading them from the stock. The stock transmission is only designed to hold stock hp and it barely does that. Go and add another 50hp and 160ftlbs of torque and that puts a big load on that stock tranny. Most of the parts that we add require machining in order to have them work right. So after the cost of the parts and the machining that is what we come up with. The transmissions are pricey, but with transmissions you usually get what you pay for. Your stock one failed once, replacing it with another stock unit is just going to cost you twice as much in the long run. Dont get me wrong here $4500 would be a tough pill to swallow to get my truck running again.

If you want to rebuild yourself it doesn't cost hardly anything. Did mine for less than $600 Thats with all new solenoids, high perf. clutches and a new torques convertor......No big deal if you do it yourself......Rock on all those shade tree mechaincs out there!!!

To give you an idea, my neighbor went out and paid $1500 plus tax to a local shop. Guy said there's nothing wrong other than a couple of little things and it would be silly to pay for one of those "high priced" rebuilds. Well that transmission got him 18 months and 20,000 miles. He has now had a different local shop rebuild it with parts from the 48RE. Well it cost him $3500 and 3 weeks of downtime while they diagnosed a bad replacement part or two.

J Body I am using mostly oem parts no billet shafts or anything fancy like that. Here goes:
Seal and gasket kit: Part # K22950N $50.78
Tranny filter: Part # 12776F $7.52
Shift kit: Part # K22908D $41.05
Lock up/ Over drive solenoid: Part # 22954B $61.20
Governor solenoid: Part # 22955 $71.64
Governor pressure solenoid: Part # 22958 $65.38
Torque converter: Part # 592 $146.16
Front band: Part # 22825F $15.16
Forward clutches H/P: Part # 22642A H/P $ 4.98 ea
Direct clutches H/P: Part # 22595B H/P $3.47 ea
O/D direct clutches: Part # 12842 $2.62 ea
O/D brake clutches: Part # 12845 $2.55
Total before uncle sam: $536.62
There is a really good tranny whole seller down here that treats people good. I have a few friends who build tranny's for a living and the use the same parts. Now don't get me wrong ATS or any of those big boys that make some **** good tranny's, of course it is going to cost more and yes they can handle alot more power and torque. This is just a basic rebuild with a few standard goodies! My tranny that I just rebuilt works like champ and it was pretty cheap!

well the tranny finally bit it! Coming home from the Rockville Regatta it slipped soo much that i had to pull over 10 miles before i got home. Let it cool. drove 8 miles stopped let it cool for another 30 min then made it in the driveway. should i let a local "mutual friend" who works on trannys all the time build it? Or should i get the parts from the list above and have him do it at his house on the side for 2 weeks?

be careful your trans may be fine!!! My truck did the same thing 1 month ago, I yanked the trans and it was fine nothing wrong with it
turned out to be a bad governor pressure solenoid and sensor=$125.00 in parts and I was back on the road.
BTW I'm now selling my Auto truck and buying a 06 6speed
