transmission bands question

transmission bands question
I am ready to adjust the trans bands and have read anywhere from two to four turns out. My question is how many turns is right or best? I tow with the truck everyday and wonder if tightening more or less will make a difference? Thanks in advance for any help you can give

Just did my wife's 98.5 this week. The one that is inside the pan is tightened to 72 inch pounds amd backed off 3 turns. The one on the outside is backed off 1 and 7/8 turns. Don't know how they came up with that crazy figure but that's what is in the service manual. Did this, added a Mag-Hytec pan, and Amsoil Synthetic fliud-shifts great. Going to install gauges this week to see how hot it is running. Can't imagine this causing any problems with a transmission if done properly. Mine were very loose with 112,000 miles. A friend bought an '01 with no second gear. He got a good deal and was planning on rebuilding the trans. He removed the pan and found parts had fell out because the band was so loose. Put it back together and made the adjustments and it is fine now.

I just lost 2nd gear this past Sunday on the way home from a fishing trip towing my boat. I drove it home skipping 2nd gear as best I could.
On inspection, the front band (2nd gear) band was loose. The adjustment was so loose that the strut and some other fun stuff. We thought about just putting it back and readjusting the band, but decided to pull and rebuild anyway. Good thing too, because the band was so thin that the spot welds were showing through the friction material. It would have worked for a while, but then it would have cooked the drum sooner or later.
