Transmission
Hi Everyone.
I just bought the truck two weeks ago (1999 2500 4X4 Sport). The dealer told me when I went in and had the trasmission fluid and filter replaced that part of the Overdrive Snap Ring was in the pan. The truck drives great and has no problems going into overdrive right now.
I have never owned a dodge or a diesel before. What are the chances that this service department is trying to take me for a ride?
If the transmission is really running on borrowed time, then the last thing I want to do is to become stranded on the side of the road in the desert with a couple of horses. So my options are:
1. Just keep driving it
2. Let the dealer rebuild the tranny $2600
3. Let the dealer install a rebuilt tranny $3400
4. Purchase a tranny and install this one myself (I have done 2 manual tranmission swaps before) ATS $3700 - $4000
I am leaning towards #4. I find that for the same price the dealer will install a rebuild transmission, I can get an ATS tranny and do it myself.
Any suggestions
Thanks

If you're going to buy a complete trans and swap it out, that job is really pretty easy (you already know that)... which is the route I would go if I were to do it again. When I did mine I had the internals replaced with the ATS components so my trans isn't physically purple on the outside, but it is on the inside.
You won't regret spending the extra money on the aftermarket trans.
