Transfer Case Vent?
Is there a vent on the transfer case for a 2002 3500 4 x 4? I have already changed the output seal and I am still getting some fluid spun around on the floor pan. If so does anyone have a diagram or pic of where the vent is located? Thanks for any help.

According to the manual the 3 possible causes are over filling, bad or improperly installed seal and clogged or leaking vent. There could also be a leak at the switch but that would probably just drip and not get thrown up on the floor pan. Also when you changed the seal did you check for a groove in the yoke sealing surface?

everything felt smooth, no knicks or damage that I could see or feel. So i'm going to try and track that vent down and see what is going on. Thanks for the help camelracer.

Mine was leaking out of the very end of the yoke. I couldnt figure out where it was coming from. I still cant understand why a little hole got there but, I had to replace the entire yoke.

Still have a problem!
I have replaced the transfer case tailshaft seal not once, not twice, but three times. It is still splattering fluid all over the bottom of the cab and now it is starting to get splatter on my tailgate (up) and the trailers I pull. The vent seems ok, not over filled, now what?? someone said something about the tailshaft housing /case may need to be replaced?? Thanks for any info.

Is it leaking from the yolk or the rubber part of the seal or is it leaking from around the tailshaft/metal part of the seal. Some times when you put those seals in the tailshaft you have put alittle RTV silicone so when the seal seats properly there wont be any low spaces where the fluid might leak from. That is what I had to do to keep mine form leaking after installing 2 seals. Worked for me, nada more leaks

You may want to check the rubber plug that's on top of the tailshaft. I had the same exact thing going on... with the fluid slung all around the underside of the truck and eventually the coated tailgate.
I cleaned the truck up underneath really well, then put the truck up on jackstands and had a trusted friend run it at about 40mph or so wheelspeed. (don't forget to be careful if you do this. lol)
It only took about 30 seconds before the fluid started seeping out around the plug on top the tailshaft. The solution was as simple as pulling the plug out with my hand, cleaning it up, putting a bead of rtv around it and then putting it back in. Not a problem since.

Does it look like the front or the rear seal might be the problem?
If it's the front, if you pull the front yoke off, there is a small felt/rubber seal that is serrated to match the spline inside the yoke. Even though you replace the seal for the outer diameter of the yoke, it will leak like crazy if you don't replace the little felt seal.
It actually "plugs" the inside of the yoke to keep oil coming out of end of the yoke thru the splines.
I had the same problem as you and was ready to change out everything and then I noticed this little felt/rubber type seal. So I thought "let's give it a try" and changed just it out. Leak fixed, I never have replaced the main output seal yet to this day.
Cost me $3.65 cdn at my dealer...goes by Companion Flange Seal, part number 04210973
Hope it might help
