Transfer Case Popping

Transfer Case Popping
I have a 2002 2500 HO extended cab truck.
I went to the Martinsville race today and the parking area was a mud bath. The area I parked at was only allowing 4wd vehicles in. I think no problem and drive on in. I reach down and shift into 4HI, let out the clutch and immediately the truck begins to pop. The best description would be like a chain slipping on a sprocket. The 4wd worked but it made an aweful noise and the more gas I gas the truck the more it popped. People standing outside could hear the pop. The popping stops as soon as I shift back into 2wd.
Has anyone experienced anything like this???
Thanks in advance!!

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Chain is streched from to much fun or running in 4WD on solid pavement. The chain is avaliable from dealer or mail order dealer for less that 140. Can replace without pulling TC. Just the rear half will do. TC are simple so easy job if have mechancial abilities. Fix leak also if fluid low.

Has the trans been kicking down lately at high rpm ? If so be sure to check the circlips holding shafts and whatnot together in there. Mine downshifted (leaning on the go pedal too much at high rpm) and snapped a clip and the shaft was moving side to side causing somewhat the same noise but I could feel it too.

I am pretty handy with a wrench so it sounds like something I could do. Does anybody have a writeup on replacing the chain or some tips pitfalls to avoid to make the job easier?? Does it make the jop easier if you take the TC out out???
Thanks for all the great info!
Oh an yea it does leak.
