Question Transfer case lubricant. Why?

Does anuone know why is the lubricant in our transfer case is ATF+4 as opposed to standard gear oil? There's no hydraulics in there is there?

One reason could be better fuel mileage (in this world where every little bit counts when you're trying to please the EPA) because the ATF is much thinner and easier to move than gear lube.
