A little past due for a fluid change in the transfer case. The drain and fill holes are on the side. Are there any tips for getting the fluid in a horizontal hole? : Also, is fluid, ATF+4 easily available. I guess I never looked.

Suction gun is how you can fill it. Should be available at the auto parts store. It looks like a grease gun, but you pull the handle at the bottom to suck in the ATF, or whatever, and push to shoot it into the horizontal hole.
ATF+4 is readily available.

The T-case is something that does not do alot of work. If you are going to change it, might as well put a synthetic like Amsoil and forget about it.

Thanx for the info. I tried two auto parts store chains today, and both told me they don't carry it. One said maybe try NAPA. I'm going to check the price at my dealer's parts counter on Monday, and go from there.

I have to disagree whit that! I think the transfer case does a lot of work. It is all ways turning, If the transmission is working so is the transfer. I think it might do a tad bit more work than the transmission. It transfers the power to the front and rear or just the rear. It even reduces the ratio when put in to 4 lo.

This is true to a point, but look at the amount of actual WORK and POWER is put through a T-case. Not much at all. No where near the work that a tranny (esp. an auto) does. When it is in 4 wheel it does do work, but how often is that? It is similar to your front diff. It is turning with the axle disconnect, but power is not put through it until you are in 4WD.

For all those reasons I did not change mine for the first 100,000. But when I did I had the most burned, stinky worn out fluid I had evern smelled.

Bill-I didn't mean that long an interval with stock fluid. . I changed mine out at 50,000 and put in Amsoil. Even if I change it again at the proper interval, I'll use synthetic.

np241HD's are pretty beefy cases that usually wont bite the dust even behind a cummins. i beat the snot outta the np231 in my jeep (not teh same case but the same design) and the chain never got loose. (not to say that wasnt just luck )

when u go and pull the drain plug make sure u got a big dropcloth of some sort down. when the fluid pours out it tends to splash on the crossmember/skidplate and go all over the place.

Yeah, that helps a lot. At least I'll be prepared for it and make a paper funnel ahead of time : Also, Oil-Dry is a common staple around my garage. Me and automotive fluids just don't seem to mesh. :- :

I'll second what quantrill said. When I changed mine the first time it was like uh bummer hope I have plenty of oil dry around. Due to the placement of the drain and it coming out the side and the size of the drain it comes out very fast and shoots out a fair distance just be prepared. I used my regular oil drain pan but a tall bucket might be better. I also second the use of synthetic in there.

This would be a good time to install a Fastcooler on the T-case.

Consider purchasing your Amsoil in the 1g container, and stopping at your local parts store for a hand pump. Sta-Lube makes one that is inexpensive, and works well. Much easier to fill all fluids on the underside.

I just changed the T-case fluid on my Jeep not too long ago. It has a little over 30K on it and we used it off roading for a few weekends and off and on during last winter. The fluid was brownish and really thick.

I used a suction thing bought from Pep Bros and had to buy the ATF 4 stuff from the dealer at 4 dollars a quart :'(. I couldn't find it anywhere else. My NP231 used a quart and a half. I don't know if it is the same for the pickups. ( mine is 2wd : )
