Trans shift Problem

Trans shift Problem
I've seen a few posts that are similar but not quite this. My truck (99 Dodge 2500 Quad Cab 24 valve Cummins 4x4) will not shift out of first to second unless I let off the gas. If I press the accellarator too hard it will shift right back to first. The rest of the shifts are fine. It will downshift fine and also into reverse. The only thing I remember it doing differently prior to this problem is the other day it stuttered a few times when taking off from a stop. No problems with the trans prior to that. Please help. I don't know of any reliable transmission shops here in Louisville KY. John

berfore you do too many other things, you should re-set the apps.
It is very easy, and then you can eliminate that as a problem.
I believe resetting the apps is in the general info. on this site about the 24v trucks.

First check your trans cable, and adjust if it's too loose. Symptoms sound like a bad governor solenoid, and check gov.transducer also. Adjust bands at this time along with filter and oil, if it hasn't been done.
If you are not comfortable doing this, or don't have the tools/garage, look for a reputable and knowledgeable transmission shop in your area. They will be able to diagnose tranny solenoid readings and determine if good, just by hooking up a quality scanner.

u check fluid level? sounds like low fluid and or solenoids need to be replaced, they have internal seals that leak over time, u can replace them yourself, while your at it change fluid and filter and add a bottle of lubegard red....u can find the solenoids somewhere on ebay for 100-$150..easy fix..

I have checked the fluid level and changed it and the filter after this began. How do you check the governor solenoid? I am a very mechanically inclined person (retired USN Chief Gunnersmate) and have built several engines, but I have ALWAYS had my transmissions done for me. Also, I am new to this area so I am trying to fix this one myself because I don't know who to trust.

I have seen govenor solenoids cause a tranny to start out in 2nd gear...skipping first entirely. Your problem sounds similar...but different.
Mine was replaced under warantee, so I don't know the cost, but was a fairly minor job.... one hour at the dealers, if i remember correctly.
If new to your area, you might go here....

Contact nearest club! They are bound to know someone (or have a member) in your area... who will know a good tranny shop! For you, looks like the southern Indiana bunch!
Mark Chappel, a VERY knowledgable CTD man is only 60 miles north of Louisville, in Columbus, if the drive doesn't bother you. He's here.......

Please explain this? There are two solenoids, one will cause the tranny to go into OD, and the other locks up the T/C?? Now a screwed up governor could cause the third gear start???? But......................

If I didn't have bad luck....
Okay guys here goes. The Dealer says my front band, drum, solenoid, etc are bad and I need a rebuild or a new transmission. I find a friend of a friend who is a transmission guy (8yrs) and is willing to rebuild or swap my transmission. I look up "Dr.Evil Transmissions" out of Shaumburg IL and find out that their parent company "Roadmaster Transmissions" has a reman heavy duty 47RE for $1550.00. I buy the trans ($1550+$500 core+$270 shipping round trip) and when the trans guy puts it in last night you drive it for five minutes and the "O/D OFF" light comes on and exactly one minute later the "TRANS TEMP" light comes on. Roadmaster is only open MON-FRI and SAT by appointment and I guess I didn't have a 'Friggen' appointment! So I am now in the waiting game to see what Roadmaster is going to say for me to do. I'll be _ _ _ _ if I'm going to pay shipping and removal/install fees again for a trans that has 0 miles on it!

RoadMaster reply
RoadMaster Trans is awesome if they are correct. They called me today (they're not even open!) and said that there was a production change in mid 1999 and my trans was sent with the old style internal electronics from early 1999. They will overnight me (Monday) a set of new late 1999 electronics and reemburse me the 1.5 hours of labor to have them installed. Maybe my luck is changing.
