Hey guys. Got a question about a trans problem I'm having with my farm truck. Its a 2001 2500 Cummins. It started out as slipping in and out of overdrive then got where it wouldnt shift into overdrive at all. Then recently it wont go into 1st gear as well. Feels like my truck has a poweglide in it. I dont know if the O/D and first gear problems are related or not. Just curious as to if any of you had experienced this. Thanks.

See if you can pull any codes from the dash. Sounds like limp mode, sort of a fail safe with little (or no) electrical controls/inputs to get 2nd and 3rd gear only. A few things can cause this, but checking codes first, that might give you a direction to head into. Bad gov. solenoid, sticky valve body/other parts, etc. I've read on these year trucks electrical noise/low voltage can wreak havoc as well. Start with the simple things, cleaning grounds and all connections related to the trans starting at the batteries.

Ok thanks. This may be a simple thing but how do I check for any trouble codes? Some kind of reader im guessing.

Cycling the key (without starting) on-off-on-off-then on (might be one more cycle? not sure never owned one!) but it will display any codes in the odometer on certain years, I think 00-02? Big chain auto parts stores will check codes for free as well. Look through the sticky's at the top of the page too, lots of info there.

Sounds like your in limp mode. Probabbly needs a governor pressure sensor and soloniod , and the grounds need to be cleaned up on your engine for the Torque converte lock up issues. I had the same lock up issues and finally ran a makeshift ground wire right to one of the tranny pan bolts and it finally eliminated the lock and unlock issue so far..
