psalm: If your question aims at lowering the voltage this is a purely aftermarket transmission stuff. Basically aftermarket trannies run at higher pressures and if the computer sees them it throws you into limp mode. Limp mode makes you start out in 3rd gear.
If you don't have an aftermarket valvebody ( responsible for the higher pressures) you shouldn't try to lower voltages etc.
On the stock tranny there are basically two possibilities:
a.) There is more pressure than there should be- service valvebody etc.
b.) The electronics see the wrong pressure. Service all contacts and check the wires from the tranny to the PCM ( under the hood behind air filter on the firewall), if that doesn't cure the problems think of changing the sensors in the tranny.
The other problems mentioned like the torque converter clutch not unlocking, TC ballooning etc are IMHO usually the effects of some other problems. One has to differentiate between stock and aftermarket transmissions since their operating parameters are different. (Pressures, shift points etc)
A whole load of the electronic problems can be tracked down to bad contacts. Sometimes if you change a part it remedies the problem because there are clean contacts on the new part.

Ok I'll check all the contacts and see if that works. If all else fails I'll just take it to the dealer. I hate to do that though. I'll keep you up to date. Scott

sorry psalm69 i should have clarified more ... i just meant to illustrate that my problem was a computer error and would come and go with no apparent cause ... i would think that if it was a torque convertor ballooning or mechanical problem i would be more consistant ie: when towing or when the tranny heats up ... good luck

I don't know too much about automatics how do I check the governor? Or the governor transducer solenoid? I mean is that something that can just be checked by dropping the pan? Prolly not but I hope so. BTW thanks for all the input guys, this site is very helpful. Scott

Plug a pressure gauge into the governor pressure port and drive a bit- governor pressure should rise with speed- depending on the model year. It should do so consistantly and it should also be stable on the same speed.
On a 98.5 the pressure with the vehicle at standstill (gear selector in D, engine running) must not exceed 3 psi. The pressure should rise aproximately 1 psi per 1 mph rise in velocity when driving.
It's crucial that the pressure returns below 3 psi when the vehicle is stopped.
I hope that somebody will chime in if the pressures are different for the 01.
(One of the main reasons to buy the factory manual)
If your pressures run out of spec or the rise and fall isn't smooth and all the contacts are good I'd expect either the governor pressure sensor or the governor pressure duty cycle sloenoid to be the culprit.
Both of them can be accessed with the pan dropped and the VB removed.

psalm: As long as your tranny is stock I'd strongly suggest that you get a factory manual for your year. Lots of cool info and diagnostic paths. On mine the manual was the best 100 US$ spent.
If you get an aftermarket transmission, see that you also get the pressure and test specs for your model from the mfg.
If you got them it's not that difficult to get a diagnosis done and it does really help in identifying the parts. (and in controlling repair invoices too.)

I know that all of you were sitting on pins and needles wondering what my transmission problem consisted of.
Well if I can get a drum roll please.
The diagnositic found erractic governor pressures, so the solenoid and transducer were both replaced.
Now you all may think that that is the end of the story and so I would have thought as well.
As it turns out someone down at the dealership STOLE $155.00 worth of CDs and a DVD.
Crazy stuff for sure!

Well, congrats on the fixed tranny, and my best wishes that you can either get your stuff back or get properly compensated.
I'm quite shure that there is somebody at the dealer running into problems at the moment.
