Towed kind of heavy today, how do these trans temps sound??

I had to haul some loam today, pretty heavy stuff. I was pulling a double axle Bri Mar hydraulic dump body trailer with 4 yards of loam. The outside air temp was 93*F. I was in stop and go traffic for about 20 mins and the tranny gauge was reading about 190*. Once i was able to get out of traffic and get the truck in 3rd gear locked up the temps came down to 150-170*. I had to pull a steep hill in the back country to bring the loam up to my mothers house, i pulled it in second gear with about 25psi of boost, tranny temps stayed reasonable about 180*. Once i got to my mothers house and pulled into her driveway and down in back of the house to dump the load, the temps got a little bit higher then i would have liked to have seen. I had to put the truck in 4Lo to back the trailer up in some loose dirt, after i backed up, the tranny gauge was reading about 210*. That had me a little bit concerend. Do these readings sound about normal? It would not take long for the tranny temps to come back down after i let the truck cool down after pulling the load and shutting it off. By the time i left, the tranny gauge was reading about 125* I just dont want to harm the expensive tranny!! Thanks

Is your sensor on the output of the tranny? If so I think these temps are perfectly normal. I was running around today with no load and outside temp was 80* and my tranny gauge was 185*

Those temps sound good. In Arizona heat, the tranny temp would read 165-t175 this is just setting in the sun on cement.
Here is Houston with outside temps in 90's or more just around town, in slow and go traffic, empty 180 is not unusual.

I think as long as you stay below about 230 you should be OK

Yeah, those sound about right. I was hauling a load the other week and I saw mine get to 240! I freaked out, it was going pretty much straight run of 65-70 mph, hauling 25k# My tranny is rebuilt also, I never saw those numbers with my stock tranny though. I'm gonna talk to my mech. about it. What do you guys think?

Dssimecek,

Where did you purchase the gauge package? Your sig descibes my truck to a 'T' and I would like to install the same pillar package and gauges in mine.

Thanks,

Temp sound very good!
Reverse will always produce highest temps, so just avoid it for long periods of time.
Better to cool it off in neutral (for max circulation) than to just shut it down... IMO.

It seems that when i put the truck in neutral for a long period of time, temps actually creep up a little bit instead of cool down. I know if i get stuck in traffic and i am not moving, i put the truck in neutral while waiting and the yseem to creep up a little bit rather then cool down. Whenever i am at a red light or what have you, i always sit at the light in neutral rather then in gear.

OWW, I purchased the autometer gauges at "truck toys" in Sedro-Woolley, WA.and later added the 3 gauge piller and FP
If I had to do over again I would probley go look right here in the DTR store or one of the advertisers on here, or Geno's garage. I would also get a EGT/Boost combo gauge.
