Throttle Dead Spot

I have a 2002, Ram 2500, 5.9 L CTD with an automatic transmission. While driving I experience a throttle dead spot while in O.D. with no load at about 1400 RPM. When I push the throttle I get almost no power increase, push the throttle a bit more and it will shift out of O.D. and then run normally, shifting back into O.D. and continue to run normally It's an intermittent problem. I've had the transfer pump replaced with the Cummins upgrade about 3K miles ago. The VP-44 injection pump seems to be delivering fuel at the correct volume and pressure because when running normally (which is most of the time) I have plenty of engine power. This issue just began 300 to 400 miles ago. I have 87K miles total on the truck. I'm thinking Throttle Position Sensor. Any thoughts?

Same symptoms

Hey PRG,

Me too, exactly! Mine is a 98.5 with 168,133. On level its OK, but get on a slight hill, I have to kick it down to get it moving again.

I hope it's the TPS. I'll be watching what gets posted on this one.

I was thinking it was my fuel filter. I changed that & it did help somewhat.

Dave

Actually, I did a bit more research and found that when the transfer pump fails and the VP-44 see less than 5psi of fuel pressure, that will most likely lead to VP-44 failure. The transfer pump was replaced about 3 K miles ago which was covered by the warranty. I called the dealer I bought the truck from and he's considering replacing the VP-44 under warrenty since the transfer pump failed only 3 days after I bought it. search the forums under "dead peddle", there's a lot of information. however, I'm still open to any thoughts from the forum audiance.

Another symptom I have is slight engine RPM surge when cold, whether I'm ideling or driving. This smooths out once the engine is warm. Still think it's my VP-44?

I just recieved my Quadzilla XZT+ but am waiting to install it until I get this issue resolved. I also have the Quadzilla Recon gage with the fuel pressure sensor kit. Again, waiting to install this too.

I just installed a Blue Chip VP44 and the difference is dramatic. Far more throttle response and much more power. The install went very well and the various instructions I downloaded from this web forum and the TDR really were spot-on. The only problem came when lining up the return port on the new pump with the existing return line. The new pump's port was about one hole diameter forward (toward the front of the truck) of the old one. It was easily resolved by reducing the bend of the existing line about 4-degrees.

It really runs like a champ and great service from Blue Chip. They come highly recommended.

Cycle the key three times without starting the truck. On the third time leave key in the "on" position, and in the odometer the codes will flash. If you see a P0216 it is injection pump timing failure and you can pretty much kiss the VP44 goodbye.

APPS: Accelerator Peddle Position Sensor.

Senses the position of the peddle and communicates that to the injection pump and other fuel system components. It can be reset by disconnecting the batteries, waiting at least 30 mins, then turn the key to the on position and depress the accelerator peddle all the way, then slowly release completely. Connect batteries and the sensor will be reset.

I might be wrong but i think you have to reconnect the batteries and then press the peddle to the floor. Check this out its the instructions on how to reset your apps. look in https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1 Comes out of the 2nd gen drive train and engine, faq thread.

Hope it helps
