Thinking about stock tires?

I am thinking about going back to the stock tires. I purchased my truck with 315's. With 3:55 gears I am lugging it so bad in slow driving. I tach 1900 at 70, so when I am going 55-60 the RPM's are not in the sweet spot. I think this has contributed to premature tranny failure twice.

Do you think my driving will inprove with this. I know that I will probably lose MPG. This also creates a little problem towing. I have to disable OD almost always unless I am do about 75mph.

Any thought to this. I wish I had the 4:10 with the auto tranny. Also...I have never calibrated the speedo. This should put back where I need it to be. Will I realize a significant power increase off the line doing this? What do stock 245's tach at?

If your tach reads 1900 rpms at 70 mph your speedo has been recalibrated.

My opinion is if someone is going to put on tall tires or tow heavy the 4:10's are the only way to go. 4:10's will probably get you better fuel mileage due to not over taxing fuel verses rpm's verses hp to keep or get things rolling. Just my opinion.

Yes I think the power upgrades, taller tires, and towing without upgrading your trans IS the reason you have gone through two transmissions.

I meant earlier that I am doing 1900 rpm close to 80mph. When I am doing 70, I am really doing 80 with 315's. What do stock tires tach with 3:55's?

With the stock 265's and 3.54 rear, 2000 rpm = 110 kph (~70 mph) in 5th gear.

With the price of fuel, I just put another set of 265s back on. I had 285 goodyear MTRs and lost 1.5 -2.5 mpg. I have a 2001 4x4 with an auto and 3.55 gears.

I thought larger diameter tires gave you a little better fuel economy.

285 if uncorrected are reporting about 10% less mileage than indicated? Could this of been part of of your lost.

If you do the math, I think you will find the difference between 265's and 285's is 3.5%
With 285's (on a truck that came with 265's)...indicating 67.5 mph, you will be going 70 mph.

Tread pattern and width do also affect mileage. Wide tire more rolling resistance, agressive tread more rolling resistance, wide agressive tread tire lots more resistance.

Get 245/75's, 265/75's or 235/85's. All of these will be better for towing by raising the RPMs. Also they might be better fuel economy because they're lighter, less rotating mass.

I get about 18mpg with my 315's. This of course is taking in the consideration that my odometer is not racking the miles like it used to. I add about 12% to the odometer reading, then calculate milege. I don't know the exact precentage I am off, but I am 10mph off at 60mph so I figure that is 12- 13% off.

Do you really think I will get better mileage with 245/75's? I definitely agree it will improving my towing. Should raise my R's right were they need to be.

If your truck came with 265's, you would be going 70 mph when indicating 64 mph. If it came with 245's.... actual 70 mph would be indicating 62 mph.
