thermostat replacement

How hard is it. Any tips?

Starting yesterday the truck won't get over 160ish. I figure start with replacing the thermostat. Any other ideas?

Drain some antifreeze out of the radiator. Move the three bolts on top of the thermostat housing, put new thermostat in and bolt back up. Longest part is draining some of the antifreeze out.

As said 3 bolts and its out. I use a suction gun and pull 6 or 8 pints out and dont worry about the drain. Lot faster that way.

Sounds like a astuck open T-Stat. Can pull it and check in bucket of hot water...see if it opens and then closes again.

I use a clean tube and siphon out about a gallon into a 5g pail.
Swap a 190* (winter only) back to a Cummins 180* every spring for our 6 months of 90*+ weather.

Don't put it in upside down. (It's been done before).

Dont buy a cheepie from the parts store - get it at Cummins or order it if you dont have a Cummins shop close to you.

I went to a local cummins store and a thermostat was 123$ !!!!!!!!!! I dont like the Motorad brand which is sold at pretty much every parts store, they are junk and if they do work when you instal them they will fail shortly after.
I have had good experience with Stant, they make a good thermostat
I bought one locally for 30$(approx) and mine now heats up to 192*

Just as an example, I bought a new Cummins thermostat at a Cummins Northwest dealer back in Oct. Its a 180* flavor for my 98.5, so your p/n will be different.

p/n 3967195, $32.78

Not sure what part of IL you are in, but try one of these locations for a start. Give them a call. They should be able to ship whatever you need.

I'm all for making a little money but come on 120$ for a thermostat, heck for that kind of money it had better instal it's self!!

I think the Alberta Advantage is slowly slipping away..
There was a time, not that long ago our money was at par (sob)
