Gee, you guys act like HID has some cooling system experience or something

If I got attacked by a shark and struck by lightning at the same time, I'd STILL have better luck than HID!

I didn't replace the petcock but, I did drain the coolant .

Needless to say I also fell victim to that dang o-ring after changing the antifreeze. Didn't leak till a day after I changed it.
O yea I have a bucket under there right now till I can get a o-ring tomorrow.

For anyone even considering turning that valve just plan on replacing the O-ring when you do it.

Wish I would have seen this old thread before hand.

I'm getting ready to flush mine soon and would like to change the thermostat when i do it. I've heard there are 2 different thermostats for the 24valves, which one do I need? what was the factory one? It seems to open around 190 now. I'm thinking I should stick with that as i hardly ever tow, and unfortunately, I make a lot of short runs in the ol girl.

I use a product called No-Rosion fromm www.no-rosion.com that extends drain intervals to 5 years. It neatralizes acids and replaces chemicals needed to keep cooling system healthy. I run it in all my vehicles. 5 years seems better thean every year. I do add a quart every year to replenish.
I ahve heard the NAPA or Cummins coolant to be recomended, in conjuction with distilled water.
Are we saying to not even use tap water to flush the radiator?

I had to replace the O-Ring on mine. It had started leaking after replacing waterpump. Just used small vice grip pliers and 'popped' it out. (after I had backed it up the 1/4 turn and pulled while turning a bit more)
My O-Ring was creased so was leaking. Other threads have recommended some waterproof grease to minimize sticky O-Ring on next use. (its also probably much easier to put back in).
I had forgot to buy the grease when I got the O-Ring and had some small trouble getting it back in. With a new ring I couldn't get it to 'bite' the threads (for lack of a better words since it isn't really 'threaded') so I tapped with a small hammer till it 'popped' in place. No more leak!!
