Unhappy tach drops to "0" and truck loses power

Lately I have been having trouble with the truck in my sig. The tachometer. will start to dance around, then drop to 0. When this happens the power drops. then after a while (sometimes a long while) the tach will jump back to normal and normal power is resumed. the only code I get when I do the key trick is P1693. some times it stumbles a bit going down the road. and if it is screwing up and I am idling the truck sometimes stalls. If I shup the truck off when the tach is at 0. the lift pump continues to run for a few seconds like it would if you bumped the starter. when I restart the truck if is stalls some times it acts normal and some times the tack only jumps up for a second and then falls back to 0.

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give as much detail as possible.
I searched and found nothing so any help would be great.

Ben

I replaced mine once and it was a real pain to get out of the block. I would recommend doing it with the block warm, it's a very tight fit.

I ordered a new crank sensor from NAPA. Should be in tomorrow, $108 canadian. It was only $43 from Cummins, but my closest dealler is 1.5 hour or more from here. and 3-5 day delivery. not really a big savings for me by the time I drive and get it.
I hope it comes out of the block fairly easy.

thanks for the help.

Here is a great tech article for CKP replacement.

CLICKY

BTW, I'm familiar with the Coldwater area, we used to go offroading around the lower Big Chute area years ago. The last time I was there was a couple of years ago.....we were sledding through the area....beautiful sled trails there.

not much for sledding right now. the 16-18" of snow we had went in about 2 days. definatly good 4x4 trails around the big chute.
if you are ever going to be in the area. shoot me a PM. we can get together for a beer.

I was under the impression that 2000 and later trucks got the info from the cam sensor, not the crank sensor.

I hope you are replacing the proper sensor.

All the 2000 models that I have seen had a crank sensor. Think they changed over to using the cam sensor in mid 2001.
