Swapped in a PowerLoc, no Speedometer now

Hello all. I just swapped my open carrier for a new powerlock carrier in my dana 70. I am running 3.54 gears and just swapped the ring gear. I noticed that the open carrier had a gear on it that stuck out way further than the ring gear. The new powerloc did not have that and was the same diameter as the ring gear. After the swap I noticed my speedo was not working and I am thinking the larger diameter gear on the open carrier spun a sensor for the speedo. Is there a new sensor or an easy way to make my speedo work again? How doese this carrier and speedo setting work in anyother dana 70? Thanks for the help.

The '94-'97 gets the speedo info from the T-case.
The later '98-'02s gets it from the rear axle.
I am guessing this has something to do with your problem.
I am thinking that "extra" gear runs your speedo.
Maybe you got the earlier years style ring?
Check the sticky I believe there is info in there about how to get your speedo to work with an earlier axle.

That sensor does more that operate the speedo, it does the rear abs sensing.

I guess the ring gear is pressed onto the carrier. Never dug into one before but they go into some more detail at quad 4x4. I only see one type for all D70s.

Sounds like you need to press a tone ring onto the carrier, but I'm no expert!

That extra gear is called a tone ring. Every time one of the "bumps" on it goes past the sensor, it reads it. That's how it runs abs and speedo. Neither will work without it installed.
I worked at Dana when most of those axles were built. They are not too hard to swap just be careful not to bend it too much

If you heat it evenly with a torch to hot but not glowing and drop in in position it will sometimes fall right on but have a mallet ready just in case. When it is hot it should just tap on. This is assuming your carrier is new enough to be cut for it.
