Straight piped my truck

Straight piped my truck
Went down to the muffler shop today and had them cut out my resonator and muffler and weld in a piece. Sounds much better, and the turbo seems to spool up a little quicker. Best 30 bucks I've ever spent.

Rick

Re:Straight piped my truck
Question,

When you guys straight pipe, did that do anything for the noxious droning/resonance that occurs at a certain road speed? My 99 Q4 short box 4:10 has a very annoying drone right in my sweet spot. 65 mph. Comes in around 62 and disappears at 70. I've read some things on this board referring to it, but information seems to be speculative at this point. Nothing definitive for a fix. If I could move this noise farther up in mph, say 75+, I would be satisfied.
Re:Straight piped my truck
The droan all has to do with the length and type of pipe. I have aluminized steel piping that ends at my back axle. I have it pointed down and only get a droan between 1800-1900 rpms. If I take that pipe off and have it shooting straight back, it droans between 2100-2200. It just depends on how long the pipe and all is. It has to do with the frequencies of the exhaust and truck matching each other.

I've heard of a fix for the drone;

Clamp a 3-4 ft. piece of angle iron to the pipe ar at least 3 places.
It stiffins up the pipe and stops the resonance

RIMFIRE ~

I can't believe you haven't figured out through logical dedusive reasoning (what?) the root of your problem ~ it's your "sweet spot" ~ run that baby at 72-77 and - voila - no drone. Besides, they sound better at 2025 to 2150 r's anyway...

Re:Straight piped my truck
you mean "deductive reasoning" OK?

in iowa, the legal limit is 65 on 4-lane. in missouri, my other place it's 70 on 4-lane. Otherwise, 65 gets me by on secondary roads without a headlift. i've had more tickets for speeding than most who post here have years, in fact, me included. wifey says 10 grand or more for the sake of public safety...........she's wrong again......it's all about revenue!!
