stoopid noobie fuel pressure gauge question?

just bought my first cummins. to be on the preventitive side i want to install a fuel pressure gauge. my truck is a 98 24v, but my fuel pump is not attached to the fuel filter assy. it is attached to the block and i have the metal lid on my fuel filter assy( the older style). my question is can i just put a T in the rubber part of the fuel hose going from the filter assy to the vp and run it to a gauge in the truck or should i spend the $80 for the kit that replaces the banjo fitting? is the kit REALLY worth it?

On your '98 just take the plug out of the top of the filter for your pressure outlet.

looks like there are two plugs in the top plus two banjos. does it matter which one plug? i think there is one closer to the vp if i remember right. will have to check tomorrow.

I'm assuming your truck is a 98.5, 24 valve. And yes there is two fittings on top of your fuel filter canister (if they are the same as a 99). I ran my gauge into the fitting closest to the engine/vp. I'm pretty sure that this fitting gives you post filter readings (pressure after it is through the filter).

Don't mind the dirty truck, years and years of winter & salt=
