Stock Turbos-How long do they last?
I have not found any threads that discuss the average life expectancy of our stock Holset turbos.
What have your experiences been?
As far as replacenment, it seems these are also relatively inexpensive to replace?

I know a guy that has 300K on his stocker. Truth is, I think it varies and depends on how much heat and stress you put on it. He drives mostly hiway miles, never tows and I bet he rarely sees more than 10psi boost.
I also know guys that cooked a stocker before they had new plates on the truck.
A stock unit is pretty reasonable. There's lots of 'em used out there and they are cheap to rebuild if it just needs to be freshened up. Things like housing contact and broken shafts will certainly make it an expensive proposition.

On my 24v, I had about 360k km on it when I took it off for something bigger. Never leaked a drop, good clearances on it. My friend has it on his 96 Talon now. I took the stocker off my 12v today, had 213k km on it, discharge had old oil residue in it some some dirt collected in it. Its not fresh, so not sure if it puked a seal and 'repaired' itself, or if the previous had an oiled filter on it for some time. It ran good, and saw 40+ psi on a regular basis for the last 8k km on it.

Have 408K on 98.5 3500. Ran Edge box and 275 injectors for oover 200K of this. Regularly gross over 30,000 lbs. and haven't had any problems. Must not hurt them too much to put a little extra heat on them. Wife's 2500 has over 200K, has a tuner set in the highest setting and it has not shown any problems either. They are amazingly tough.

HX-35 is very stout, as long as it is operated within it's designed parameters. By that I mean roughly under 30 psi boost.... staying within Holsett's MAP.
Over spinning them creates serious stress and heat.
Unfortunately this happens a lot. You can see many that have turned broze in color from over heating.
On a stock truck, the HX-35 could/should last as long as the Cummins. JMO.

It seems to me that itis a good turbo, especially for towing. It seems a little slow to spool up, but I am not here for the races, so that is no big deal.
What do you guys think are it's strong points and weak points?
Is Holset owned by Cummins?
