Starts, Runs Rough for 10 sec, Dies

I have a 99' cummins motor that is giving me fits. Its in an F800 box van. Truck was running perfectly, then I fueled up, drove about another mile, then parked the truck for the day. When I went to fire it up in the afternoon, everything cycled normal, I turned the key, and it fired up, ran very rough for about 10 seconds then died. Tried several more times, and same thing everytime. There are no warning lights coming on or flashing on the dash where there is an "Engine Warn" and "Shut Down Engine" light. The cummins shop was about a block away from where it was parked, so they towed it in, but they cant figure out whats wrong. I keep sitting by the phone waiting for their call, but the minutes just keep ticking and i see dollars going out the window. Anyone have Ideas? Think the VP44 is dying? I would think they could diagnose a bad lift pump at the cummins shop pretty quickly if it were that. I did have the oil sensor replaced in December. I know they had to do some rewiring for it since the new plug didn't fit my old one.

Drain the filter into a glass container. See if it's full of water or other crud.

That's kinda what the vp in my truck did last week. Running perfect when I shut it off and five minutes later it idled raged when it finally did start and would die. I'm putting a new vp on. Bad thing is the vp on my spare truck is trying to go out too! I'm about sick of this vp thing, this is around 6 in the last year. I'm looking at duramax's right now!

Well, the cummins shop seems to be taking there time diagnosing the problem. I know its probably tough not being able to pull any codes or anything, but they worked on it all day and didn't come up with anything??? The guy I talked to says he thinks it is the vp but just isnt sure. Anyway, when I asked him what a new pump runs, he told me a pump would cost $2500! That seems a little steep for just a pump only doesnt it? I thought I could get one for around half that. I don't know if there is a difference in my pump since its in a medium duty truck or not. I know its rated at 190 HP, and the pickups with this same motor are rated higher.
