Sluggish 24 Valve

Hi everyone,

Had a fellow member over to the house-we drove eaach others trucks. I asked about how mine felt, Floorman said slow. I drive it all the time and noticed no big "lack" but overtime this must hav ebeen going on. New LP with 15psi at idle-8 WOT loaded. Slightly less in the cold. Where do I start to regain lost performance?

Thank you!

Check your fuel filter. Then maybe clean your IAT sensor and MAP sensor. Then reset your APPS.

McMopar:

You probably already thought of the following and it doesn't apply - but I would ask:

Are they close in weight? Did one have a load?
Are they both stick or auto or one of each?
Are they both two or four wheel drive?
Are both trucks still stock or does either or both have modifications?
Do they have about the same miles on them?
Do they have the same rear axle ratios and both have stock tires?

If none of the above applies - You indicate you drove his truck - did it seem quicker to you?

In addition to what Big Blue suggested I would look for a boost leak. Or maybe if an auto the torque converter is not up to the job.

Good luck,

George

His was a 3500 with 4:10's, his 80K mine 98K. Both auto's both unloaded, both 4X4, took the "box" out of his truck, and I did drive his? I have to try big blue's suggestions.

Hopefully you should feel a difference after applying BigBlues suggestions. I reset my APPS this past weekend and I could feel a difference at takeoff and shifting. Good luck.

mcmopar from floormans sig you can see why it would feel more responsive
AFE air box, 4;10s edge ez.
that is a big diff from stk. air 3;55s and 4" exaust.
the first thing is to get some air thru the turbo with a air box you already have the exaust. I am not sure the exaust is helping without the BHAF I think it would feel much diff to floorman after having the edge ez then going to yours with none.

anyhow nothing wrong here that money won't solve

I just replaced my fuel filter and fuel transfer pump at the tune of 1900, hopefully that's not your problem, but it sure solved mine, luckily it was still under the Cummins warranty

McMopar,

Even if both of your trucks engines put out the exact same horsepower, from a standing start his will feel and be more responsive and he should beat you everytime. His 4:10s vs your 3:55s added to the fact that you have a taller than stock tire will make your truck accelerate slower than his. And interesting test would be to see who could go from 40 to 70 the fastest (without the edge). The bright side of it is, you should be getting better fuel milage than he does.

Like Blackjack said "there is nothing wrong here that money won't solve".

Me too, Also what is and how do you adjust the APPS?

Don't have the money yet for 4" exhaust but also was wondering if taking off the resinator and muffler will cause a drop in performance with backpressure issues?

Mc, you cannot compare trucks fairly. he has the much more responsive setup by far. First off ,his is an 01 he has 20hp/40 ft lbs on you right off the bat,add to that the HY35 turbo on the 01 that spools instantly,(while you have the HX35(moves more air),but at your hp it doesnt matter, your not using the turbo near its potential. Add to that the 4.10 he has,his truck feels spunky and quick,it has more power, and reaches full power faster. The tires your running slow you down, your truck being a 98.5 has a different program in the PCM,and the VB is set differently, the 01 VB and PCM are much more agressive,The light throttle shifts on an 01 are held nicely, and the truck runs each gear out nicely, where as the 98.5stend to get into 3rd gr much faster where they like to stay, resulting in a sluggish feeling trans. ALso the 01 programmign locks the TC wide open at 2700RPM in 3rd,where as your 98.5 will not lock the tc until OD at about 75MPH.Just the tc locking in 3rd is a huge difference at WOT.
Add the edge EZ on his truck,on top of all thet other advantages he has,and I think your truck should feel like a slug next to his. Dontget down about it,do soem bombing and get it up to par! Also everythign your truck gives up around town,it wil get back on the interstate. Go on the highway and rol on at 70mph and watch the 01 fade off after about 100 or so..........
