Six Speed Gear Clash
I have a 2001 4WD 2500, HO with 6 spd. The Trans shifting started out a little tight, but was feeling OK by 25000 miles. Now at 70000 miles, I am feeling some gear grinding when going into 4th, and occasionally into 3rd. I can usually avoid the clash by hesitating a second or 2 before dropping into gear, but when shifting normally, I get it about 30% of the time. Dealer says that with 70000 miles, normal wear on the shifting parts is causing it, and not to worry, no big problem.

Any ideas or opinions. I cringe each time it happens, and would like to know what the real problem is, how or if it should be remedied, etc.

Changed the fluid and put Mopar's Hi $$ synthetic fluid back in. I pull a 16000# tri-axle gooseneck about 30% of the time, the rest easy empty hiway miles.

Sounds like your "yellow-metal" synchronizers are going south, and no, that's *not* normal for 70K miles.

You say you changed out the oil for Mopar synthetic -- What did you have in there before? If you were using a GL-5 rated oil, synthetic or dino, that's the problem. GL-5 will wear erode the synchros in about 40-50K miles.

If you had the original Mopar fluid in there for the full 70K miles while pulling the trailer, that's abusing the transmission -- but I wouldn't think the synchros would wear quite that fast.

When you changed out the oil, did you clean the magnetic pad at the bottom of the transmission, after popping off the PTO cover(s)? A lot of metal would be an indication.

You might try using a synthetic oil like Royal Purple or Redline MTF (I'm partial to Redline). They're easier on the synchros and may *partially* solve the problem -- even easier than the Mopar standard, I've noticed.

GP

At about how many miles should I change my tranny fluid. I have the same drivetrain and year as prairieguy and would like to avoid such problems. Right now I'm just shy of 45,000 miles.

-SFB
